What about the 300 H&H ???

@PCC600
I went to a Holts auction house in Sandringham while I was in Norfolk. The amount of firearms is mind boggling and the owner is a great bloke to talk to.
He had a nice buffalo stopper that had your name all over it at a reasonable price.
A beautiful underlever 8 bore double.
Bob
Bob - I did bid on an 8 bore Joseph Lang hammer double at an Australian Arms Auction some years ago . It was a nice example with a Jones underlever . I opened at the top of the estimated range and a phone bidder came in at miles above what I bid - I got nuked . Have bought quite a few nice rifles from Holts over the years. They are good to deal with .

If you plan to build one think about the twist maybe 1in 9 and shoot heavy bullets
yes and no. The standard 1:10 in a .30-06 works well enough for Woodleigh 240grain PP. If one wants to make even heavier bullets then a steeper twist is required but... why shoot heavier bullets?. What game requires even heavier bullets from a .30cal rifle than 220-240grain?. If thats the case why not step up in .375H&H instead. In my book the .300H&H really shines with 200-220grain bullets. I think Barnes Bullets many years back made a .30cal 250grain round nose bullet. That one could be shot in a standard .30-06.

It is my new favorite .30 cal cartridge. Feeds smooth, hits hard, not the wallop of a .300 WM or Wby, but very efficient out to 500 yds.
Know your loading and you can shoot nearly anything with it.
I shoot 180 gr TSX and they just do it!
I am taking for brown bear next fall.

That is on my list of bullets to try out!

I use Swift 200gr A-frames in both 300WM and 300 WBY in Africa with great results. I drive them at 2825-2850fps as Bill at Swift recommends and they work like a charm on everything I've shot with them including Eland and Leopard.
I've always wanted to take a 22 Hornet or 222Remington to Africa.

But to answer the question on "most countries in Africa only allow 2 guns to be brought in", I will say that I've never had an issue bringing in 3 guns which I always do since 2019. Just submit the paperwork and it has never been questioned.

when i bought my remington 721 in 300 H&H mag, it was offered as having a cut buttstock and recoil pad insatalled, so it was marked down to 800.00 usd out the door. i bought it knowing it came from the factory with the pad on it.

I picked up a nice 721 myself this year for about a grand and put a glossy Leupold 3.5-10x42 on it. I already had 800 Sierra MatchKing 190gr molys I bought last year for peanuts, so I decided to use them for load development and practice then try the Hornady CX 190gr with 60ish grains of H4350 or H4831SC, whichever is better. If that doesn't satisfy, then the Accubond or LRX also comes in 190gr.

Loaded properly the old 300 H&H out runs the 300 win and give the 300 Weatherby a shake up
It will put a 1599 gn tsx down range nipping hard in the heels of the big Weatherby.

I contemplated building a 300 H&H but the cartridge is too long to fit in a standard action 98 Mauser without cutting into the locking ring. Won't compromise the strength of the action but just more hassle than it's worth. I can fit 300 Win in the action without cutting so just as well go with it instead. Of course, resale value on a 300 Win built on anything is not much. The market is flooded with them. Exotics may fetch a better price if the seller is patient.

Back in the 60-70 the 300 H&H was the favorite 1000 yard Bench rest round. Feeds flawlessly . As already mentioned it is best with 200-225 gr bullets.

I have a 300H&H in process. Bartlein has my recently acquired Sako AV magnum action on which the rifle will be built. Frank at Bartlein has what he calls an "accurized" 300H&H reamer on order for a build he wants to do, I am piggy backing for my barrel. I think I will put a Timney trigger on it and a McMillan stock. The plan is to take it on a PG hunt along with my 35 Whelen.

Bob - I agree with good loads a 300H&H will leave the 300 Win for dead . Similar to the old 303 , a far superior performer to the 308 Win . Factory loads are so conservative for these classics - they never approach safe performance levels for these classics . I can’t understand it - has nothing to do with the actions .

I'm new to the site and have been looking at all the recommendations for African Rifles. I figure my first trip will be a PG safari so I been looking into a rifle to dedicate solely to hunting African PG. I have seen a lot of good recommendations but I never saw the 300 H&H mentioned. I was thinking of building a 300 H&H and have it push a good 180 gr bullet. This should take damn near anything right? I know a 30-06 will do most anything the old H&H will do, but the H&H head stamp just screams SAFARI. What do you guys think?

I have three rifles in mind for tackling Africa. A 300 H&H for PG and any antelope, 375 H&H for anything big or dangerous, and a 6x45 for the tiny ten and any varmints.
I’m totally a fan of this one. Unfortunately, no commercially manufactured rifle is chambered in .300 Holland & Holland Magnum today. And factory loaded ammunition isn’t plentiful.

If you can ever snag a pre ‘64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .300 Holland & Holland Magnum, go for it !

I have one I bought from a forum member, and love it. I took it to Africa last year with 180 grs TTSX and worked wonders. Kudu, Nyala, Impala,

Here it is next to a monster Nyala my friend took with my rifle.

I have 2 rifles in this caliber. With my model 70, I have taken pronghorns, whitetails, mule deer, elk and black bears. Over the years I have worked up loads with Nosler Partitions in 150, 165 and 200 gr weights. In that rifle, 150s actually shot the best and I have killed many deer and pronghorns with that bullet. In the early 90s, I became a big fan of Barnes X bullets and I have been using those on game ever since. A few years ago, I purchased a NIB Remington model 700 Classic in 300 H&H and it sat in my gun room, waiting for just the right time to take it on a hunt. In April, I took it to the Eastern Cape on my first African hunt. With Barnes 180 grain TTSX bullets, It performed flawlessly on gemsbok, nyala, kudu, impala, waterbuck, zebra and and sable. All were one and done with no tracking required, but I did shoot the sable twice, as the first shot was a bit forward, breaking both shoulders but just clipping the lungs. The second shot was only take to hasten his demise. When I go back to Africa, I will likely take the same rifle for with my sights set on both colors of wildebeest, a black impala, a bushbuck a warthog and a ???.

300HH works great on Namibian plainsgame . My loads consisted of 220gr and 240gr Woodleigh bullets.
