I never understood the allure of the Tiny Ten until I set foot on the ground recently on my first trip to Africa. Now, after seeing Bush/Grey Duiker (No shot opportunity), Klipspringer (No quota) and Steenbuck (Photo attached), I am beginning to feel the love. Question for those with experience... What is your preferred caliber for these hunts?

I shot the Steenbuck with my 30-06. Not pretty. I have heard 375's with solids and I have heard 22 Hornets. I would like to hear some opinions.

My full hunt report is here: https://www.africahunting.com/threa...-safaris-greater-kruger-north-limpopo.104629/

I have taken 7 of the Tiny Ten, all with .375H&H. One was taken with a solid, the others were taken with Barnes TSX. I was never interested in full body mounts so I just aimed center mass and shot. The TSX bullets acted a good bit like a solid on the ones I shot.

Thanks! I only had the 30-06 on the truck the last afternoon when I shot the Steenbuck.

Have all of the tiny 10 plus a Vaal rehbok

Brown bush diker. 9.3x74
Steenbuck buck. 338 RCM
Dik dik 7RM
Cape grysbok 6.5 creedmoore
Oribi. 6.5 Grendel
Klipspringer. 9.3x62
Red diker. 500/416
Suni 500/416
Blue diker. 22 hornet
Sharps grysbok 22 hornet
Vaal rehbok. 6.5 creedmoore

How no problems with destroying fur etc as all bullets were designed for bigger game and not match or to soft of softs. The biggest thing to remember with the little guys is DON’t hit them on the shoulders. Shoot behind. If you hit the shoulders it will blast a big hole.

I felt the same way on my first hunt to Mozambique. I didn’t have a license for any of the TT and Coutada 10 was lousy with them. I saw trophy quality bush duiker, red duiker, blue duiker, suni and oribi. At the time I could’ve shot all of them for what some South African outfitters are getting for a sharpes grysbok plus a few hundred bucks. This remains my biggest regret/ mistake I’ve made in my hunting career.

Now I love hunting them, I’ve taken bush duiker, steenbok and klipspringer, can’t wait to get back to a place snd hunt the others.

Thats a beauty of a steenbok!

Thank you! Definitely did the shoulder shot / big exit hole with the Steenbuck. 30-06/180 A-Frames. Lesson learned.

Thank you! My wife asked why I shot a “baby”. I had to tell her “woman, that’s a stud!” Still a baby to her. lol

I've always been curious about a cartridge specifically for the tiny 10. From my reading I understand most guys just use what they have handy but I like the idea of having 3 specific rifles for africa. One specialized to the tiny 10, a PG rifle, and a DG rifle. A 22 hornet or possibly the 22 magnum seem like they would be perfect options for the 10, accurate and not enough velocity to cause a ton of damage.

22 Hornet. Use lead tipped soft points and you can shoot them anywhere, even in the shoulder and it's fine. Combination gun or drilling with 9.3 and 22 hornet or 222 rem is my preferred since you're normally after other game too.

These were all shot with 22 hornet from a drilling. Quick kills and only tiny entry/exit holes in the hide. Klipsringer was 246 yards, stretching it with the hornet. Duiker was <60 yards and you can see there's no damage at close range either (picture shows exit wound)

If I ever do my TT heavy hunt it will be with a .22 Hornet.
I took my bush duiker and steenbok with a 7mm REM mag and my klippie with a .308 WIN.
Blew the steenbok to hell but my outfitter got me a replacement skin, no damage at all on the duiker or klippie.

22 Hornet would definitely be ideal, for me, I took my little guys as opportunity presented itself, so that’s why mine were taken with my 375H&H.

Bow
So far Ive got a duiker and klipspringer.
I realize I have a long way to go, but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Making a trip in September, was planning on going for a few of the tiny 10 but was just gonna bring one rifle, a short barrel 308 running 165 AFrames at pretty modest speed. Sounds like I need to be careful even with the Aframe.

I am working thru the 10 also
Steenbok with 175 A frames in 7mag.
Damara dik dik 375 300 grain swift a frame (not pretty—-shoulder mount only

Dedicated hunt—6.5 CM with 143 ELDX

I’ve shot a fair number of smaller critters here in the states with a .308 loaded with 125 GR fusion reduced recoil loads. No damage at all on bobcat, Fox, coyotes, raccoons or javalina.

Red-Flanked Duiker exit wound. 375 Ruger with a TSX bullet. Oops. Wish I listened to my guide and brought solids. Tried to hit center mass.....
