Tented Camps

I often wonder why there aren't more tented camps in South Africa. It seems that most operations are based out of nice chalet's or fancied up farm houses. I suppose it's to provide a "higher level of comfort" but for some reason I miss the tented style sleeping.

There is just something about those tented camps with full bathroom that is really neat. It "feels" more wild. The air seems more pure and you hear the outdoors more than you do in a chalet. It is a bit cooler in the winter months but the atmosphere is totally different than sleeping inside.

I've hunted in tented camps in RSA and Zim but haven't really seen them advertised much anymore in RSA. Has anyone really thought about bringing these back?

The tent base you have is a great set up. This must be a safari tent option as these are the ones we used in Tanzania. The raised floors and steps to gain entrance are a nice touch. The ones we stayed in were the same , however your steps are fancier.

The ones we had in camp had , king, queen and twin beds in them. Lots of room and i likes siting on the front porch and watching the day begin. I spooked the wake up attendant a few days as he did not see me when coming up the steps to provide the 3:45 wake up call.

I agree Tom, tended camps have that unique rustic charm. I personally prefer a more basic, rustic camp.

I have hunted out of rustic cabins and tents all my life. As an example, our moose hunts are conducted out of a base camp. Then we even take it a step farther. We load our gear into a canoe and take off hunting, sometimes not coming back to base camp up to seven days. I like the idea of tent camp hunting in Africa. The nighttime sounds would be an awesome. A tent camp would add to the fascination, capturing the appeal of the African bushveld.

My son, Matt, and I are utilizing the tents with Marius in July.
My wife and I plan to go in 2-3 years and she definitely wanted lodges, but after seeing the tents she says "Oooohhh, I wouldn't mind roughing it in that kind of style".

I think tented camps in wilderness areas are wonderful. I hunted out of a seasonal camp in the Caprivi and it was both comfortable and true wilderness experience. On the other hand, staying in a tented camp on a game farm while your PH heads off to his house to sleep in a featherbed is a little too much like play acting for my tastes.

All the tents have featherbeds, so I actually prefer to stay there. I get what you are saying about the wilderness, and I agree. But as you know we have to cater for a lot of partners these days, and these sub-species like their comfort. If mama ain't happy, no ones happy.

But I totally get what you're saying.
