Shipping Quote

I have one going through ATL with D&L logistics. I have a nyala shoulder mount, two kudu skulls, and an impala skull. I'm dreading that bill like a plague...

I had Wyatt at SSI do my crate which is sitting in JFK right now waiting on Customs and USFW to get the heads out 10 days so far.

For a Volumetric 87kg actual 50kg crate with a buff skull, impala skull, Warthog skull, bleskbok skull, wildebeest skull, zebra rug, buffalo gun bag and left over flatskin, plus the impala flatskin was 3857 all in to my door.

$1470.20 airfreight on Turkish
$650 ground freight to my house

Soon

I am in the camp when my son and I go back he wats a Gemsbok shoulder mount and I want a Kudu skull but other than warthog tusk mounted on a plaque German style its videos from here on out.

AHG shipping handled the trophy shipping for our last hunt. I was very happy. They used FedEx and the mounts came straight to my front door.
AHG =?

The quote says estimated chargeable weight 500 KG, estimated crate size 200x125x120. I'm thinking 1100 pounds for a crate, must be some heavy wood, or I don't have strong enough walls to hang these heavy mounts. I have reached out to Richard at Afton for pricing and I will also reach out to SSI, plus anyone one else recommended. I have spoke with the PH who I was hunting with to see if he wanted the buffalo, and he is more than pleased to take it if need be. My buffalo, was 47 inches wide and an old beat up warrior scared from head to toe. I know hanging in a SA lodge he would get look at by more people than hanging in my game room downstairs.

AHG = African Hunting Gazette which is owned and published by Richard Lenstrum. He also owns the Afton Safari Lodge properties in Joburg and Cape Town. He started AHG Trophy Shipping because of concerns and comments from his lodging clients about the high cost of shipping trophies home and they may have to do less hunting because of those costs. Go into his website and you should be able to download a brochure he has on taxidermy and trophy solutions. I think AHG Trophy Shipping is also Craig Boddington endorsed.

Anyway, I’m not being paid by him, just found his pricing to be much better

I had sticker shock about 3 month ago, decided what I had mounted to leave with PH for lodge.
I could do part of another safari for what it was going to cost. So from now on all my hunts are non export or management hunts. Pictures will be good enough from now on, not going to let it stop me from hunting over there.
I'm thinking of doing the same on my next hunt, $7500 AUD it cost me to get 3 buffalo skulls home last time. I think I'd rather spend that $7500 on hunts instead of a set of horns on the wall. $7500 is another non-trophy buffalo I could have hunted.

No way in hell I would leave a 47” buffalo behind!! But thats just me. Definitely use the best grade lag bolts you can find for the mount.

I’m having Richard at AHG handle my 2025 safari, my understanding is that he has a deal with several South African taxidermist to provide clients with South African prices.
I’ve used his shipping before and was pleased with the service even with delays caused by Covid. Nothing really special in the crate so I thought it was worth a try.
When I used his shipping it was before he had anything to do with the taxidermy.

We just received a shipment from SA to California, one of my co hunters had a Buffalo shoulder mount along with a Kudu and Sable, each of those on their own pedestal. We chose ship vs air as air was going to be expensive. His fees for his crate which was approximately 48" x48" x 96" were $3556 shipped to Houston with an additional $955 to California.

We got 16 mounts shipped from JNB to ATL for $1,200 in 2007. (they all came in a wooden crate the size of a refrigerator)

Dang, have shipping cost got crazy.

We have roughly 16 mounts (shoulder& euro) waiting to be sent out.
Can't wait to hear what their estimate is going to be one.
Will be our last taxidermy shipment, save leopard and MP from future hunts.
Pictures going forward work just fine and my family doesnt have to worry about selling even mounts for pennies on the dollar when Im off to the happy hunting grounds.

I still want the skins/skulls/horns.

Probably something in me left over from my Neanderthalic roots...

Me as well! I can’t imagine leaving a trophy behind. Maybe in the future but I’m not there yet.

I thought the same thing. This next shipment should have us right at or a couple over 95 pieces of taxidermy.
Im firm in my new outlook on future taxidermy but will probably crumble like a cracker when the time comes and the magical question is asked that we all know far to well, " would you like that skinned for a shoulder or full body mount".

You might also ask for a quote on Ethiopian. That works as long as Forward Air will still carry taxidermy.

I have a crate leaving RSA in the next week or so. Air freight to Atlanta for my crate is about $2,400 plus the coppersmith fees. I have 4 shoulder mounts (nyala, wildebeest, oryx and impala) blesbuck skull, zebra rug and 4 back skins. My buddy with similar stuff plus a shoulder mount buff is somewhere around $5,500 shipping. By the time I added overland freight to the slow boat cargo charges to get it to me from Houston there were not really any savings.

So I received a shipping estimate for a finished shoulder mounted Buffalo, Sable, Zebra and Kudu skin and skull from SA. The price was $5450 plus import fees on the US side of $1350 to Chicago, got a little sticker shock going on right now. What the heck has shipping went up that much? Can't help to think I'm over paying, correct me if I'm wrong to feel this way? By the way if I opt not to ship the Buffalo the shipping drops to $2900, import price stays the same.
According to the above you are spending an addition $2.5k to ship a single buffalo shoulder mount? Prob cost you more to mount and ship in Africa than it would have be local.

If you haven’t yet committed to the current shipper’s quote and you have the crate dimensions with actual and volumetric weight, I would reach out to AHG Trophy Shipping and ask them to quote shipping costs. I used AHG Trophy Shipping this past fall and found them to be at least 50% less then other shippers I previously used with similar size crates.

I think the shippers are used to us paying whatever they quote when it comes from the taxidermist they have a preferred relationship with and we don’t know any better to shop around. Richard Lendrum who owns Afton Safari Lodge and AHG trophy shipping has been trying to break the mold of the D&P or taxidermist preferred relationships and get hunters to shop around more. He discussed with me a couple of previous trips and I decided to give them a try last year and it really did save money. They picked up my stuff from the outfitters directly and took care of it all for much less than I had been paying.

If you haven’t committed to the shipping quote yet and AHG gives you a better rate they will go pick up your crate wherever it is and handle from there. Worth a quick check
@MontanaPat may I humbly ask that you start a thread for just trophy shipping and taxidermist (if on has not already been started) this really needs to go up there with safari planing etc but with it’s own headline.
Excellent information!

Hey Steve, This is Steve Washington we met at KMG last year. I am interested in your Winchester. Would love to speak with you about it. I work third shift and I cannot take a phone with me to work. Let me know a good time to call during one of your mornings. My phone is [redacted]. Live in Florida so I have to account for the time difference.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Good day, Slider.

Do you by any chance have any 500NE brass left that you are willing to part ways with?

Best regards,
