Yeah, jock itch is so much fun on safari. All those evenings sitting around the fire scratching one's junk are the kind of memories everyone in camp will never forget.

I have a Columbia full brim boonie that is my go to for hunting or fishing. Mama got it for me for Christmas about ten years ago. You call roll it up and put it in your back pocket and it never looks any different. I believe it was $30. It kept me cool in Limpopo as well!

Congrats on doing all those trips with the same hat! Hats seem a bit like cars, everyone has a favourite!

I think you need something robust, with a brim (not too big) to keep the hard African sun off your face and one that will last forever.

Tilley T3 wanderer in olive is as close to an African bush hat as exists, only in my opinion of course. Also looks like old army issue, is super comfortable if you have a large pip, and can be used as a cushion or pillow and will last forever!

I brought a Stetson very similar to that whilst passing through Santa Fe. Must say it’s the most comfortable hat I’ve ever worn. I’ll have a look and see what one it is.

Yep. Gotta be careful to read the fine print. And it is very fine print on my phone. Price is a bit high but not plum ridiculous like some of the felt hats.

Crushable wool. Really enjoy wearing this it’s cool even in hot weather. Also not bad for autumn spring and waterproof-ish

Dogs not impressed he’s like what? It’s a frecken hat….now if it was a pheasant or one of those squirrels I really be interested or better than that bring on the neighbours cat let’s fuck some shit up

Since instagram hears my thoughts (and l guess my browsing history and secret dreams) it threw this up in my feed. I was excited as I also actually liked the look of it, but when I click, sends to a list of hats on their site that does not seem to include this one. Irksome…but ok since I’d have that thing soaked through in sweat just trying to enjoy my morning coffee.

Hats are very personal regarding taste and style.
I grew up on a ranch in Texas wearing cowboy hats, exclusively. I then spent 31 years in the military and it just seemed…out of place.
I’m fairly skinned and still needed a hat - I’m not a cap guy as this helps shade the eyes and that’s about it.
I transformed to the Africa, Australia, early western style back in the late 90s and never looked back. FWIW, western cowboy hats didn’t take on the modern cowboy creases till the early 1900s and this was pushed faster when western movies hit the scene.
My hats are usually pretty high quality beaver, are normally made by a custom maker and run at or above $1,000, but I’m happy with the investment. I like a lower crown and have the brim cit to 3.75”.
The main one I’m wearing in theater pics is about 10 yrs old. It was made by Greeley Hatters in Colorado.
The Akubra “Territory” is also pretty good. WAY cheaper and made from rabbit fur. It’s not near as good as a quality beaver, but it ain’t bad. I cut the brim down on it as well.

All I have to say is, "Where's my hat?" and my dogs go ape. I routinely play fetch with my hats. That way if one gets blown off, they are right on it.

Made me smile. I also grew up on a ranch in Texas. Not a huge place, few hundred acres of cattle, leased out an adjacent section kept under coastal hay, just west of Grandview, and then bigger chunk of property in the hill country my father kept enough cattle and few horses on for ag exemption that we recreated/hunted more than anything else. If I wasn’t playing football, basically wore boots and cowboy hat, with ugly toes to prove it. (At least that’s what I blame for them)

I miss wearing a nice felt hat but also recognize here in Alaska while it’s cold enough for one much of the year, it’s also windy enough when spending longer hours outside I have a hood up, which is not easily done with a brimmed hat.

End of the day, they just still look so damned cool and are functional in so many other scenarios.

The problem here in louisiana is finding a full brim hat that wont bake you to death. For hunting I like a regular standard issue boonie. For normal day to day in the summertime, I havent found anything I like yet except a ball cap, which still let's your ears and neck get cooked.
