Replacing this Old Hat

Well sh*t, now I may have to wear it. Hard to shy from what almost feels like a dare. May have to see if I can find a couple last-minute Hawaiian themed safari shirts.
Those are actually legal camouflage.

Hats are like boots. Different designs for each use, temperature, rain etc.

Ball caps are useful in many environments.

I just bought another1000X. 100% beaver wool hat. But it wouldn’t be practical in a 120 degree humid environment or constant rain.

Fun fact: when ranking felt hats. A modern XXXX hat doesn’t have the same Beaver count as one from even the 1980s or 90s

To match 1950s or 60s quality 4X. A modern hat would need to be very high X count. Unfortunately the X ranking system isn’t regulated or standardized.

I have owned several beaver felt cowboy hats over the years. Done with that. Too high maintenance! Back in 2009 I discovered crushable sheeps wool felt hats. Mine still looks great, weather resistant, easily cleaned, and truly crushable (always retains its shape). I inadvertantly wore it pheasant hunting once last fall and it actually worked ... not well, but it worked. Luckily the wind didn't blow that day (very rare for eastern Montana during hunting season).

I typically use a US military issue boonie hat for warmer weather but I also have come to enjoy the Tilley designs. Not sure what model Tilley I have but it’s incredibly lightweight and easy packing.

I’ve also given away several of the boonie hats to trackers and skinners. The relatively inexpensive price makes it an easy and thoughtful gift, especially for those who truly need sun protection.

Excitement for a monumental level hunt for me is all but overwhelming as the date closes in. And likely late for the moment, my mind shifted to a proper hat for the occasion.

I see all these cool action and adventure photos folks share, and of course trophy pics, with cool hats and I want that. I just can’t ever seem to sort what feels right for me, and when I do, then it looks funny.

I don’t often wear hats much any more despite growing up wearing a cowboy hat about 90% of the time outdoors. Looking back through my photos of hunts and adventures the last almost decade, I’m wearing basically the same damned hat, just in a couple different colors.

So I need to replace this old hat…

Come here and do a hunt with us...you get a free cap...cheapest way I can think of to get a nice new cap..... ;) :A Thumbs Up:

Don't take off your hat!
Take care of him! Not everyone has these photos you showed. That hat brings you hunting luck

Stetson for Filson - Wolf Canyon...

That is a great hat.
OTOH, I can no more pick out a hat for another man, than I can pick out a woman for him, lol. Some things are always going to be just personal....And I SURE want to be able to try on a hat.

@Wildwillalaska - two things you should Never change on a Hunt —- your Hat AND your underwear (underwear can be changed AFTER the Hunt). Never NEVER change your Hat - and that one doesn’t even look broken in? Guessing it doesn’t even smell?

$400? Yikes! This one cost me $20 at a grocery store in Oakhurst, CA summer of 2009.

Thought I lost it this winter and bought an almost identical wool felt hat at farm supply store in Havre, MT for $60. Turns out the old hat fell off the arm of my couch onto Puppy's favorite nap spot. Apparently she just shoved the hat out of the way under the end table. I discovered it a couple weeks ago searching for a lost TV remote. So my 12 year-old grandson inherited the replacement hat. He wears it everywhere except school. Mom won't allow that. Sigh!

Your higber end hats tend to have better felt and types of felt. Plus custom fitting.
Watson hats start around 600 ish

My wife says I have a head that's made to wear hats. Good thing because I have a face for radio. ;) These are my most commonly worn full brimmed hats. I can't find a picture of me wearing the Tilley Ultralight T5, but it's a really good hot weather option with a 2.5"-3" brim.

I agree, a mug like that surely has broken a few mirrors. I suggest wearing a paper sack for headgear. :D

Your lady is a doll though. Reminds me of my wife. She must be Scottish?

Easy. Buy yourself a $15 or $20 boonie from Amazon. Cut a small opening in the edge of the brim about where it's even with your ear, run about 18" of 12 ga copper around the front.

Trucker caps are more or less a fashion statement. A cheap boonie keeps the sun out of your eyes, and off your neck and ears. It's a fashion statement of sorts - it says "I don't give a shit about form, only function."

Ha, one of the things I find so fancy about hunting africa is the laundry service. On sheep hunts, be it a week or three, you pack extra socks, but you have just the one pair of underwear you have one, same for most everything else. I do not typically change hats mid-hunt...but I just might...

Sure wish Field Ethos had the Mexican Wedding Shirt in stock, would totally fill out the vibe for my hat. Hunt in that, swimming trunks and some flip floppies....I'd be coo-kid styling for sure. The Eles would all come running...granted likely to roll me, but bet it would attract.

Who is out here not changing their underwear on a hunt when they have an option for clean underwear?

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl

Hey Steve, This is Steve Washington we met at KMG last year. I am interested in your Winchester. Would love to speak with you about it. I work third shift and I cannot take a phone with me to work. Let me know a good time to call during one of your mornings. My phone is [redacted]. Live in Florida so I have to account for the time difference.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Good day, Slider.

Do you by any chance have any 500NE brass left that you are willing to part ways with?

Best regards,
Boela Bekker.
