Professional Hunter personal hunt

For you PHs out there. With all of your experience and knowledge, if you are the hunter does your choice of gun change. Instead of your stopper do you go for a lighter scoped rifle?

Not a professional hunter, but since I’ve been routinely hunting in Africa for the last 48 years … I’ll chine in all the same.

To answer your question, It varies from hunter to hunter. Joe Cheffings (for example) used a BRNO ZKK602 in .375 Holland & Holland Magnum for hunting his own dangerous game personally (loaded with RWS 300Gr TUGs & Remington 300Gr round nosed steel jacketed FMJ solids). But when I went on a Safari with him in Kenya in 1974, he loaned me the .375 for hunting Cape buffalo and lion and eland … while he used a BSA Majestic in .458 Winchester Magnum as his backup rifle (loaded with Winchester 510Gr soft points & 500Gr cupronickel jacketed FMJ solids).

I know another white hunter who (for example) hunts dangerous game exclusively with a Westley Richards Mauser in .425 Nitro Express. That same rifle also gets used for backing up clients. He uses hand loaded Rhino 400Gr solid shank bullets and 400Gr monometal solids in the rifle.
