Source for this? Data centers don't pump billions of dollars into local communities. That's a rich man's talking point. Many rural areas don't have the trades people to do the work, so they're brought in from other areas. Just like when we fund a rural road project. The prime contractor already has his subs lined up from out of town. They then take their paychecks and head back home after the project is over, minimal local investment. The temporary investment is in construction workers staying at the local hotels and eating at restaurants, etc. Certainly not billions, maybe a few million.

And gain huge property tax relief.

Many of these data centers, and new large capital investments in general obtain massive tax breaks, so little to no property tax benefits for 15-20 years. Or, in the case of Trump's first major project, 40 years. Kinda of a loose, loose, loose for the locals then isn't it?

They are coming either way. We have Solar and wind projects everywhere near me. That full disclosure I am profiting from.

At least the land owners get lease payments for these projects, data centers, not so much.

I’ve seen data centers. They just look like a big monolithic rectangle rock formations. Not as obtrusive as wind and solar.

That's debatable. Solar fields look nicer to me than a big amazon warehouse styled building.

And with wind and solar the whole community does not profit as with Data centers.

I live in southern Michigan. You won’t find a more diverse work skill base anywhere.

Believe it or not. Which ever enterprise, corporation, etc that generates the most income in an area. Pays the highest local, state and federal taxes. Even with tax incentives they contribute immensely.

The last company I retired from was often the largest tax contributor in most counties in my part of the state. High school campuses, for merely one example were built off that tax base primarily from this one corporate source. Road commissions benefited. Etc. Etc.

I attended many chamber of commerce dinners and saw often the tax revenues received locally and each large corporations contributions.

I also attended meetings where that tax base didn’t exist. Guess what. Roads, schools, quality of life period was drastically different.

Believe it or not corporations drop A LOT of resources locally.

I assume new data centers will use a more modern cooling system. Last time I checked those cooling systems use more electricity than evap water coolers, pick your poison. Soooo… add that to the basic, large power demand and no way around the inevitable of higher electricity cost to every consumer.

Electric utilities have to be very political. They’re under the gun of state regulations and federal regulations so they toe the line and don’t run their mouths politically.

But many would tell you covertly that data centers certainly increased the demand and cost, but it’s primarily the forced abandonment of coal fired plants and investment in natural gas and other costly generation methods that have raised homeowners bills.

They’re never going to say that publicly and they can’t afford to switch based on each presidents administrations whims.
