I despair at Trump’s grasp of international strategy

He simplifies everything to that of a second hand car dealer

His ‘art of the deal’ is just bollocks

He gets away with it, not because of clever strategy, but because his bumbling stupidity is backed by the power of the US

I believe that his entire global policy is built, not upon on US strength and a hundred years of partnerships, but fear of China

He’s rather do a deal with one megalomaniac in order to try and thwart another

He appears to have turned his back on a Europe that has not honoured its obligations

However

The choice just might be between the European prodigal son ….

And its psychopathic cousin

Only you guys can decide

I don't disagree with you, but at least Trump has gotten the EU to step up the funding of their own defense and not so dependent on the US. At any given time, the EU could end the war in Ukraine. Why haven't they stepped up to the plate?

How could EU have ended the war..? EU is too weak militarily to put enough pressure on Putin and in addition to that, Putin is desperate to improve matters with the US and have sanctions lifted..

Not enough..and besides Germany buy most of its gas from Norway.. Hungary, Slovenia and to a lesser extent Slovakia buy gas from Russia..

It’s a fair question

Europe has allowed itself to get too sick and too weak

I think, though, that the penny is starting to drop

European countries are starting at long last to rearm

The Germans are expecting Putin to make a move on the Baltic states by 2029

Sadly Britain is handicapped by a socialist Gov determined to destroy the nation state

We won’t be rid of them for 3 more years by which time we might be in an irrecoverable economic death spiral

Even if we can recover, we will have a problem with an ‘enemy from within’ that will concentrate all our resources

We will have little to contribute to the defence of Europe

Curiously I’m a fan of Trump and his domestic policies - I wish we had him

I remain frustrated at his international approach

Up until a 10-mos ago, NATO incompetence was US incompetence. I would argue, because we are the most powerful member state, we are still responsible for any NATO incompetence. The real issue was that our foreign policy objectives were no longer in alignment with those of the EU - particularly with respect to Russia. The invasion of Ukraine caused the scales to fall from the eyes of most European nations as we elected a government with them firmly glued in place.

France, Germany, and even the Ukraine itself, are responsible for the Ukraine's failure to achieve entry into the NATO alliance.
Russia has long had ambitions of getting back control of the Ukraine. That is why Russia was so vehemently opposed to the Ukraine joining NATO, and why France and Germany were opposed to Ukraine joining. European fear of Russia.

Trump dont care much about Ukraine..

Trump is well known for taking things personally… it’s never “just business” with him… you can get away without bowing and kissing the ring.. but if he thinks you’ve disrespected or discredited him in any way, it’s going to be a very long time before he stops putting the screws to you…

He doesn’t like Zelensky…and there are legitimate reasons why..

Zelensky was clearly in the Biden and later Harris camp… in 2024, right up until the election, he was palling around with notable democrats, flying in USAF aircraft to swing states having discussions with D leaders in those states, etc… as late as the end of September 2024, he was meeting face to face with Harris, garnering her commitment if she won, and stating his support for her campaign..

Granted, he also met with Trump in Sept 2024… but about all that was said publicly in that meeting was that they held a common view on Russias invasion of Ukraine..

JD Vance in particular has shown significant personal disdain for Zelensky… and Trump, unlike a lot of presidents, appears to listen to the counsel of his VP to some degree…

And then there’s the hoodie in the white house incident… and the follow on commentary from both sides in the 24 hours after..

And the mineral deal that was initially agreed upon, and then Zelensky wanting to change the terms and conditions at the last minute, in front of the cameras rather than quietly and in private..

I’m not saying Trump is right.. if anything, I’m acknowledging that he often lets personal issues get in the way of business…

But… Zelensky certainly hasn’t done a very good job of making any real effort to befriend Trump either… a smart man would recognize the way to get Trump to work with you is to compliment him, and go out of your way not to piss him off…

Putin is using those old KGB skills masterfully… he recognizes what it takes to get Trumps attention and what it takes to move him in directions you want him to move…

You’d think someone would be advising Zelensky properly on this… it’s not all that hard to figure out..

There’s always that pesky threat of nuclear retaliation. THAT’S the reason no one’s willing to take any meaningful action to save a nation that, in all honesty, at a political level no western nation really cares about beside making “Russia Bad” talking points. This war could be stopped in a week if the west actually had any appetite in making sacrifices for Ukraine.

I whole heartedly agree with you…. Only problem being that EU nations had abandoned military spending for years; if EU countries had spent the same amount of money on defense as they have on settling “refugees” then this war could have been settled quick…. Or more likely never have happened in the first place.
