PG Load Choice for 300H&H

PG hunt bringing 2 rifles. The "light" rifle will be a 300H&H. I have two loads, both shoot well. Load 1, 180gr Accubond @2,925fps. Load 2, 175gr Federal Terminal Ascent @2,815fps. Cross over velocity is at 350 yards. 180AB carries 1,800fps to 600 yards. 175 TA carries 1,800fps to 650 yards.

Which load to take? Probably 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

For sure.

Your skills (shooting, stalking, etc) will make a lot more difference than the load choice.

When shooting, I enjoy ringing steel at long range. When hunting, I enjoy trying to get closer.

Different strokes for different folks.

My first trip over was with a long-throated 300 H&H Ruger No 1. 180gr TTSX at over 3,000. But my longest shot was ~300 yards and the average for 15 animals was probably under 200. Several were under 50 yards (Nyala and 2 of the Zebra).

Both are fine. I use Barnes TSX and have not had an issue.
The .300 HH will take everything up to buff.

I was very satisfied with the 200gr Terminal Ascent bullets fom my 300WM. The one I recovered looked like an ad, and had retained 93% weight.

I took a 300 h&h with 200 gr swift a frames to Namibia this year. Performed great. That said if you’re choosing between the two I’d go terminal ascent, I’ve killed a few elk with them in 280 Ackley. One of my favorite bullets. Accubonds being one of my least favorite bullets.

In Australia, my M98 .300H&H has killed about 200 buffalo or so, plus other feral animals, mainly with 180 grain Barnes TSX, Woodleigh Hydros, CEB Safari Solids and Woodleigh PPSNs; but also with the 220 grain Woodleigh FMJs and RNSNs.

When I took it to Africa I used 180 grain Woodleigh PPSNs and picked whatever load grouped the best.

I’ve never worried about velocity, just bullet performance and accuracy.

I think the Accubond will be a good choice, however what is the biggest animal your after with the .300H&H?

My trip to Zim the only plains game I took was Impala and Bushbuck, but the 200gr partitions worked great; but I wanted a .300win load that would be a “do all travel load” and I just loaded some 200gr Barnes LRX-BT.

The 180gr will do it but with the TSX you get sectional density with the longer length; and I know one young man in Australia travels all over that big island killing everything with 200gr TTSX in .300Win at modest velocity.

Great caliber. Accubond is fine. I prefer the TSX or TTSX. Something around 180 grains is perfect.

All of that said, I've probably killed the majority of my African critters with Sierra Game Kings. It's what the PH has, and I've borrowed a rifle for most of my hunts. They're not my favorites, but they work. I'm a little more careful to wait for a good broadside when using them.

I am also taking a 35 Whelen with 225 Accubonds, so I think I should be covered regardless of size. My son is bringing his 7PRC.

The Swift 200gr A-frame in a 300 mag of any kind is my choice for plains game and Leopard. It has never failed me and I've used it in 300H&H with great results.

Of the 2 you are asking about, I personally would use the Terminal Ascent.

TA is a mega premium bullet, and you have the world by the tail with the 300 H&H. It can be hand loaded way above factory limitations. Alloy bullets will respond well to the extra speed. Great choice in a great "African" caliber.
I would take the performance of the TA over any extra speed by the accubond.

TA is a great choice for everything. Why is is loaded so slow? Is that just where you found an accuracy node? You could probably get that to 3100 fairly easily.

Last year I took a Rem 721 in 300 H&H, and shot Hendershot reloads with 180 gr TTSX. My friend used it for plains game. The 300 worked wonderfully on all the animals taken. Two got away but was due to bad shots from the shooter.

I am going back to the range for the TA load development. I discovered it was actually a rifle (not optics or load) problem not a load falling apart problem as velocity increased. I should be able to get considerably over 2,900. We'll see, the TAs have a notoriety for being hard to get shooting small groups.

I’ve had good luck with TA. My rifles like them on the upper end of the velocity, near max. I can get 3100+ with them in 300 HH with R26 but best accuracy load was at 3070.
