PG Load Choice for 300H&H

H4831SC. Barrel seems to prefer it over H1000. But I did not test H1000 with the 175s. Tested with Accubonds and Partitions. Assume everything holds up the accuracy of the TAs is definitely a big enough improvement over the ABs coupled with a better G7 I'll likely be going with the TAs. I currently have all Hogdons, H1000, 4831SC, Varget, Retumbo, H4350 and CFE223. CFE223 is really nasty stuff to work with.....

Either one will work along with all the others mentioned. Interesting your take out to 6-650yds. My longest shot ever in Africa has been south of 300yds by a few. My1st trip over I used a 300WinMag and (dare I say) 180gr Hornady interlocks. To the chagrin of my PH who couldn't believe someone would come all the way to Africa and Not, use Nosler partitions. He changed his mind somewhat as my bag of 9 animals included Oryx, Kudu, and Zebra, and they were one shot kills. The only 2nd shot was taken on an already dead Warthog he thought I should give one more so as he didn't come back alive and run away, he wasn't as the 1st one did it. The other 3, fwiw, 180 Nosler Accubond 300win mag, 156 Norma Oryx 264 Win Mag, to include sable, and my last trip 338Win Mag and 210gr Partitions. all out to, from close to shy of 300yds.
Your asking about two loads that will do the exact same thing, Drop any animal hit properly and with authority, I've always concentrated on the guy sighting in on the animal through the scope and pulling the trigger as being way more important than redundancy in loadings.

I took a 300 h&h with 200 gr swift a frames to Namibia this year. Performed great. That said if you’re choosing between the two I’d go terminal ascent, I’ve killed a few elk with them in 280 Ackley. One of my favorite bullets. Accubonds being one of my least favorite bullets.

Just got back home yesterday from a father/son 15 day safari in Mozambique

IMO, stay with the 300 H&H and leave the 35 Whelen at home. It sounds like you have a great load. Just practice shooting the rifle and have a good time on your hunt. Relax. Don't over think your load. It will be hard to improve on your last bullet placement.

I have had very good performance in Namibia on multiple gemsbok using the 180gn Accubond in a 300 magnum. Thats pretty much all I run for a 30 cal rifle.

My 35 Whelen shoots pretty well. Here is a picture of site in check using different brass for my 225 AB load (going from necked up 30-06 Peterson brass to Norma 35 Whelen head stamped brass). Didn't change anything other than the brass was hoping not to have to change anything. The 2 with the black marker around were the first 2 then a group of 4 or 5 can't recall for certain, probably 4?

My very first trip to Africa was in Southern Namibia, over 20 years ago.
I brought a model ‘98 Mauser in .300 H&H, with a simple but rugged 4x Zeiss scope, using the much misunderstood these days, Nosler Partition bullet (180 grain spitzer @ just over 2800 FPS).
It was a death bomb on kudu and zebra, among several others, down to steinbok.
My longest shots were a little over 400 meters and my shortest about 50 paces.
The Brits really knew what they were doing when they designed that cartridge for African “plains game”.

I’ve never used Nosler Partitions before but considering working up a load in 300 H&H for leopard next year. Consensus seems to be that it’s perfect leopard medicine.

I’ve never shot a leopard but, by all accounts the old tried and true NP should quickly let the air out of a leopard straight away.

Since most of your shots in Africa are under 200 yds and many under a 100 yds I’ve shot 200gr partitions in my H&H and as pointed out shot placement is far more important than the bullet you choose!

Used my go-to 180 gr North Fork SS on this hunt from a 300 mag. Exit hole shown and as you can see the bullet expanded nicely but with the slightly behind the shoulder shot, he ran off about 50 yards before expiring. I’m thinking that same bullet placement with a NP might have anchored him under the bait tree.

Razorback he ran about 40 yards. Turned back to face who wounded him. Lying dead in grass as we approached in the vehicle with the PH walking in front with shotgun! I was behind all 3 trackers and game scout even thought I told PH I punched him good!!!!! Zimbabwe.

Sounds like that’s the common response with the heart lung shot. Uniformly deadly but they run 40-50 yards requiring a careful follow up just in case. I may do what Kevin Robertson recommends and go with the high shoulder shot next time.
