My wife and I will be going on our first safari (and our honeymoon) in a few days!!!!

We have different calibers I am carrying a .375 H&H

Can we pack our ammo together in the same suitcase? Does the ammo need to be on its own? We will be on connecting flights in south africa.

Any other tips?

Thanks all!

Ammo has to be in a hardsided lockable case. You can pack multi calibers in the same case. I use a hard pistol case and can put about four boxes, depending on caliber, in it. When you get to Joburg it will have to come out of your check bag and go separately. I stencilled my name and phone number on mine. No bag tag to get lost. The airline may tag it.
Congrats and enjoy your honeymoon and safari. We expect pix and a report when you return.

When my wife and I travel both guns are mine. Only have to have one 4457 and one case for ammo

but my wife can keep both our ammo in the same case?

Thanks! we are so looking for to it!

KyleS, do you have separate 4457(s) for each rifle, one in your name and the other in hers? If the importation Permit (for both rifles) is in your name you will be restricted to 5 Kg. of ammo. If one of the import permits is in your wife's name than she two can bring 5 Kg worth of ammo. The ammo needs to be in a separate "locked" box inside your checked baggage

We have separate 4457s one with mine the other with hers

Then you can each bring 5 Kg. of ammo if you want to. Remember that your checked bag including the locked box / case of ammo needs to weigh less than 50 Lbs. Do you have separate import permits? Depending on where you are hunting there might also be a limit of 200rds. Check with your Travel Agent.

can your ammo be in one of those plastic 50 round boxes then put into the separate locked box then put in your checked bag> thanks first time going

If you use the the plastic 50 rd ammo boxes, make sure they have a good latch on the box and hold the rounds separately. Then pack them in a case that can be locked and is substantial for airline travel on its own, such as a pelican case. As stated previously in this post, some airlines require the ammo to be removed from your checked baggage. Flying from the US I have not had to remove it, but making a connection in Johannesburg or returning to the US from Johannesburg, I have had to take it out of my suitcase.

Check with your travel agent who will know the policies of the specific airlines you will be flying on. Sadly some rules are enforced more than others and some not at all, but you cant count on anything.
You may need to put your ammo in a separate piece of lockable luggage.
Be prepared.

Well that's crazy. I have and have done the exact same as you. Works like a charm, 4 boxes of 308 win and 1 box of 375 H&H with 2 locks comes in under airline weight limit at 10.5 lbs.

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?
