"Obsolete" items that you still use

I'm almost never out in the bush without a traditional match safe in my pocket. Brass, nickel plated, waterproof lid, and filled with strike anywhere wooden matches. A butane lighter is more convenient and efficient, but matches will light in extreme cold, unlike a lighter that may fail when you need it most. And I prefer a paper map and compass to a GPS.

I was more of a HP 17BII man myself. It got me thr the CFP exam with no trouble.
The one with the equal sign. RPN all the way.

+1, only regret I have....my mind still things I can still do those same experiences, having survived, while my body says hell no, no way, forcing my mind to rethink the pain, the pain, aftermath of the outcome the body felt....for days or weeks later.
@Ridge Runner
The most dangerous thing an older man can do is think they are still a young person.

I take a lot of grief from my buddies about my Pennsylvania deer hunting apparel. I wear wool! Filson, Woolrich, Johnson Woolen Mills, Pendleton, Columbia, and my Stormy Kromer caps. They all wear the latest wonder plastics and I just sit back in my blind, warm and cozy in clothing ive had for 25 years or more. (im only 60) I expect my gear to outlive me. Gotta add my Schnees Extreme pac boots also, work great for the last 15 or so years.

Pain is just your bodies way of letting you know you are still alive. Never give up or give in. Pain is a mind over matter thing. If you don’t mind it don’t matter. Rock on RR!

Probably obsolete, a watch that has mechanical hands and only tells time, no date, no dials, no other furniture.

And sometimes pain is your bodies way of saying, "Stop doing that, Stupid!"

I really want a 56 chevy apache
In a few years when I have my other big projects done I want to take a 1950 ford F1 body, put it on a modern chassis, coyote engine, 6 speed manual, nice radio, insulate the hell out of the panels, oversized gaskets, etc to make it a beautiful modern vehicle that actually looks nice. The nicest part will be that there will be no stupid screen in it. All of the dash controls will be physical buttons, and to use your phone to play music you’ll plug it in with a cable, no Bluetooth crap.

19th century Bird Company police whistle for summoning the dogs. 1961 Browning A5 for killing birds. 1930s KaBar 4" drop point knife for cleaning them.

For a brief second I thought you were going to say I wore a Stormy Daniels hat. Now her sitting on your head in a blind would definitely be distracting.

@Hogpatrol

Just look up at that big bright ball in the sky and you ave an idea what time it is.
If it's dark it's night time.

I have a couple of pocket watches that have passed down the family. There is an Omega that went to the Boer War in South Africa, and a gold Waltham that was the sole asset remaining after an earlier ancestor lost his fortune punting on horse racing.
Both watches have been fully restored and perform perfectly.
I had no idea Omega was that old a company--the Boer War!

Here ya go at “second” house. Even though domestic water is hooked up, mostly use this free source… only cost… moderate labor.

Don’t need no tractor when you’ve got a carabao… particularly on steep slopes ;). In-law running our tractor a couple days ago.

I use Japanese stones to sharpen my knives and straight razor. Mostly Naniwa Chosera (800, 2000 and 10,000grit) but I have some Shapton Ha No Kuromaku as well (320, 5000 and 12,000).

I guess they aren't obsolete, but perhaps seem archaic in today's world of automated and guided sharpening systems. I found that learning how to use these stones has helped me understand how sharpening works, and now I can use almost any hard flat surface for an emergency touch up. However, I usually have a Fallkniven DC3 stone in my pack so I don't need to resort to such barbaric methods!

An interesting trick - flip a ceramic mug upside down and use it to sharpen dull knives. I've found this useful in hotel suites where they have a drawer full of dull knives.

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
