Some outfitters are offering on occasion a non-trophy buffalo.

The question:
What is considered a non-trophy buffalo?

If you guys could post some photos that would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Im not an outfitter. But I presume it is a buffalo under the sci and rw minimums.
One of my favorite hunts was a non trophy, scum capped beast. No record there, but what a hunt !

Non trophy Buffalo Hunt

Non-trophy likely refers to horn size - a smaller bull or possibly even a cow (I see no mention of 'bull' in your post). Likely to be as exciting and challenging as a trophy hunt, just not quite the trophy at the end of it

I forgot which one. But either rw or sci disqualifies a cow from all records, but the other accepts it.

It could be a bull that will not pass on trophy genetics within the heard. That hunt could be labeled as management instead of non trophy though.

Seems like that needs to be a very specific discussion with your outfitter. I would certainly consider it depending on details. Perhaps as a 2nd buffalo in addition to the trophy bull.

Pardon the jacked up photo. That was a non-trophy at Sengwa Rresearch with Mokore

Non trophy is generally a bull up to 36 inches. A cow is just a cow irrespective of size. You can get very old non- trophy bulls, their horns just didnt grow wide, mine was about 11 years old.

A 100 inch buffalo is the SCI minimum. That is a really big bull. Most “trophy” bulls taken every year do not meet that minimum. R&W requires a 42” spread. Again, the vast majority of trophy bulls taken every year don’t reach that minimum either.

That’s a beautiful bull Kevin. Personally, I will likely never hunt a trophy bull again as I simply have no place to put another one. To me an old scrum cap would be the ultimate buffalo to take.

Great buffalo, Kevin. That face has a lot of character.

I'd be very happy with that "management" buffalo. [emoji106]

Kevin, I do not mean to hijack Mark's thread - short diversion? I have read so many threads about taxidermy - Africa versus bringing it back. I believe I am bringing mine back, and a part of that is I have a friend lined up who does great work and I trust him. That said, that looks pretty good. Maybe I don't know enough to give an informed opinion, so there's that. But who did the work? It'd be nice to recognize solid taxidermy work. And if my question is out of bounds mods please boot it. :)

Bromley Taxidermy just outside of Harare does all my work TT, and apart from good curing they really understand the animals. So the character comes out. Here is my sable, I couldnt be more pleased. They pack and ship worldwide too.

Is there a difference between a non-trophy and a management/cull buffalo hunt?

The trophy is what did you put into the hunt and what did you get out of the hunt? Did it fill your expectations? Did you get that feeling? Did you feel your heart in your throat and that “Holy Crap” feeling? If it did than you got what you went after. Horn size has exactly nothing to do with it.
