NAMIBIA: Namibia 2018

Hope the rest of the flights go as planned, I know you will have a great trip.

In Africa you need to "roll with the punches." Everything will work out for the best. Just watch.

YancyW,
I'm sure glad you made it to South Africa before you missed your connection. Good luck tomorrow!
Good Hunting.................Mekis

Well the first part of the trip is in the books, I am in the Intercontinental at the Johannesburg airport. Due to storms in St Louis and in Atlanta, Delta 200 was over 90 minutes late getting us here, so I missed my connection to Windhoek.

I had about 25 minutes from when the plane doors opened to make the flight, I missed it by less than 10 minutes. So I am booked on another flight tomorrow.

For those who have wondered how this would work if you have checked your rifles all the way through to your final destination, Delta is holding my bags and will check them in for me tomorrow.

Talk to you all soon.

City Lodge is a relatively inexpensive, convenient and comfortable place to stay on short notice. We always plan an overnight in JoBurg for this very reason.

Oh, and when we plan it we stay at Africa Sky. About a ten minute drive and absolutely amazing!

Made it to camp around 2:30 yesterday afternoon, minus the my luggage with my ammo and clothes. It appears to be sitting in the police station in the Johannesburg airport, we are told it should arrive later this evening. So Philip loaned me a shirt, hat and rifle. By the time we out, it was pretty late in the day, so we were just looking for anything that popped up. Within 15 minutes we see the lone blue bull and we set out on a stalk, we were able to close the gap to 275, so we set up sticks and I took the shot, he went straight down. About 30 second later he gets up and runs, I was able to get another round in him on the run and he balled up at that point. My first African animal.

Note: what you see on the shoulder is the exit of my second shot. It is high, but I must have hit spine.

Fortunately, I have my rifles. We stopped at several places in Windhoek looking for 375 ammo, all of them said they have been out for weeks. So I am using a 300 win mag.

I'd say that was a good day! Congrats

Looking forward to the rest of your hunt. Great animals and pictures! I’m 6 weeks out from Namibia!

Great start! Looking forward to hearing how it continues

Did I miss it, who are you hunting with?

Great to see a wonderful smile considering all your issues. Good job! Yes that is a fine specimen of hartebeest! All zebras are great! That was excellent shooting off sticks on your Wildebeest!

So today was a pretty good day.

They tell me the Hartebeest is pretty good. View attachment 230236View attachment 230237

Hiho Yancy,

Yes, your hartebeest is a very good / large horned / mature bull, congratulations on your good fortune with it.
Good job on the blue wildebeest.
I love you guys that can shoot straight without sand bags.
The mountain Zebra you have is also beautiful.
I look forward to hearing what you think of zebra meat.

Hartmann's mountain zebra meat reminds me of elk.
If I went through life never tasting it, I would raise one eyebrow at such a statement.
But, that's the closest thing here in N. America I can think of, in terms of flavor and texture.
(I also have eaten domestic horse twice and it's not even close to that flavor in any way).

Any whooo, keep the updates / photos rolling in, we're enjoying them.

Cheers,
Paul.

Sorry to hear about your delay? Have a great safari.

Sir, I will gladly take that 16 gauge off your hands. I was waiting for your Winchesters but I'm a sucker for a 16 ga.

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?
