I have to take a temporary hiatus from shooting the VC 500 because of a fractured sternum. No, not from the rifle.

So how am I spending my enforced down time? Looking at double guns with the eye on purchasing. Why? I can’t possibly need another one. What am I looking at? A 577 NE and a 475 No 2 NE. I mean these two aren’t even in the same category. But both are so cool. Is there a support group I can join? “Hi, I’m Sourdough and I’m a double gunaholic.”

Please guys, talk some sense into me. Something like “put down your phone and step away from the Internet”. Jeez!

Double guns are not a good investment.

But, they aren't money down a sink hole either. A value of a quality double will somewhat keep pace with inflation and the economy. I always consider the purchase of a quality gun is the same as buying high-yield bonds where the dividends are paid fun rather than cash.

Whew you came to the wrong place to ask for "Someone to talk you out of buying a double) Hi my name is dave and I have owned 20 different doubles over the last 14 years and currently have 7. So just but both the 577 and the 475 No2, that way I feel better:Angelic:

I don’t think you should go crazy with the doubles - buy one this month and one next month so it doesn’t seem like you have a problem
That’s the most reasonable thing I’ve heard in a long time. Thanks ;-)

^^^^This! ^^^^ is a GREAT plan!!! Good luck with choosing which is first!

I don’t see the problem…

Good news! .... Yes, there definitely is ;)
You can talk about Your issue with the guys that "been there" and were brave enough to share with others :D
.....
don't want to scare You, but among those afflicted by this disease I am not aware of anybody that was able to beat this demon and get back to the "normal" life. I understand it can be like hearing a death sentence, but there is no other way to put it:
You, sir, are a gunaholic. .... I am sorry
;)

Ok, let me try.

Your VC 500 is caviar, and caviar is to be savoured, not diluted with other types of caviar. Take time to appreciate it, get to know it and plan for accessories, like a fitted gun case, an exquisite gun sling. Then plan a special hunt, a dagga boy, dedicated big Africa hunt with all the senses catered to.

Now if after that you are still itching get a small bore scoped double and plan for something special, like a bongo.

You don't have "a problem/addiction" until you surreptitiously look at a loved member of your friends or family and think "yeah, I'd sell your organs to finance my next double"... until then you only have a "serious yearning"

I'm lucky in the fact that I can't afford one so I can look at them with lust-filled eyes and not be tempted.

Now who's kidney would I choose to harvest....

Sell a kidney? Not mine. I only have one, which works at about 14% capacity :((

I like to work backwards on this matter. I’ll randomly pick up a set of dies and some brass when I stumble upon it in caliber that I don’t have. Then when I see a rifle in that caliber it just seems like a necessity since I already have what I need to get started.

I completely agree! There is something special about a double rifle. Buying one's first of forth double is thrilling! If one is patient and waits for the right double at the right price, those doubles can always be sold to their next caretaker. The experiences and subsequent memories they provide are priceless.

When I grow old and barely able to walk, perhaps I will pass on my doubles to their next caretakers. In doing so, I would like to tell that person face to face where my double has been, the miles I carried in pursuing elephant and lesser game, the animals I killed with it, and what it has meant to me.

Agree, except I plan to pass them on a bit sooner so I see the next generation using them too.

I agree, to see one's children and perhaps even one day the grand children using these family treasures to good effect... Flies will be found in eyes.

Wow! I thought I was the only one…

At Kalahari Safari, the Small Things Are the Big Things
The thrill of the stalk. The stillness of the wait. The age-old rhythm of the hunt.
It’s not just about the size of the trophy. It’s about the stories that will be told for years.
We believe the memories are the true prize. The small things are the big things.
And we’re proud to offer a hunting experience that honours exactly that.

Not sure your price range. Have a 375 H&H with a muzzle brake. Nice rifle only fired a few times. Also a Mossberg 375 Ruger its been used and shows a few hunts on it.
Two African Safaris Hunted South Africa both times,
9 game animals taken
