Big game hunter is crushed to death by elephant that picked him up with its TRUNK before trampling on him when it was fatally shot by fellow hunter

Theunis Botha, 51, was leading a hunt in a Zimbabwe game reserve
By Jenny Awford

A BIG game hunter has been crushed to death by an elephant that collapsed on him after it was fatally shot.

Theunis Botha, 51, was leading a hunt in a Zimbabwe game reserve when four breeding elephants charged at his group.

A female elephant picked up the South African dad-of-five in her trunk, but fell on top of him after she was shot by another hunter, officials said.

Mr Botha, described as a “passionate and professional hunting pioneer”, was crushed to death by the weight of the wounded animal on Friday.

News24 reported that the big game hunter had accidentally led clients into the middle of a breeding herd of elephants near Hwange National Park on Friday.

Three of the elephants charged at the group of hunters at the Good Luck Farm, the Daily Telegraph reported.

But Mr Botha is understood to have been taken by surprise by a forth elephant that charged at him from the side.

One of his hunting companions shot at the elephant after it lifted Mr Botha from the ground.

Zimparks acting spokesperson Simukai Nyasha said Mr Botha “unknowingly got in the middle of a breeding herd of elephants with several calves and was trampled to death”.

Friends have paid tribute to the dad-of-five on social media.

One wrote: “RIP Theunis Botha. Our heartfelt condolences to Carike and family. He was a great man! So sad!”

Another friend added: "A legend has fallen but will never be forgotten... It's with a sad heart that we say goodbye to you Oom Theunis Botha.

“Our deepest condolences to the family. May God be with you all in this difficult time."

The professional hunter ran his own safari company – Game and Hounds Safari.

His website claims he “perfected leopard and lion hunting safaris with hounds in Africa”.

So sorry for his wife and children.
We are all diminished by his loss.

Condolences to the family and friends

@rinehart0050 , we as hunter are the true protectors of wildlife. Unfortunately when a hunter dies from a hunting accident, the yellow belly anti-hunting lobby love to jump on the band wagon, low blow insults on the internet. Theunis was a great man that had a true passion for conservation, loving family man. Cared deeply about his hounds.

As fellow hunters we need to give all the support we can to his family.

Totally agree.

Very sad to hear this...R.I.P. Theunis..

I was so looking forward to experience Theunis Botha's methods this year....but now that will never happen. I am saddened by the nasty comments that some people have made regarding this tragedy. I agree with Mr Leach...yellow belly scum. As far as I know Theunis was not only a passionate and ethical hunter...he was first and foremost a conservationist of note...highly loved and respected. To think of it...he gave his life for the protection of our wildlife!
This whole event is sad..but let us celebrate his life...he died living...and that is where the silver lining lies.
RIP Sir.

This article carries the most vile comments I've ever seen. What a horrible bunch. I'm sure they all think themselves very tolerant.

Big game hunter crushed to death by elephant as it collapses on top of him after being fatally shot
A female elephant stormed the group of hunters and lifted Theunis Botha with her trunk before falling on him

A professional big game hunter is dead after he was crushed by a wounded elephant as it was fatally shot.

Theunis Botha, 51, was on a hunt in Gwai, Zimbabwe, when his group was charged by four breeding elephants.

A female elephant picked up Botha in her trunk after he fired at the others and collapsed on top of him - crushing him to death - after she was shot by another hunter.

Heartbroken friends described the married father-of-five as a "legend", while opponents of big game hunting offered little sympathy following his passing.

Botha, from the South African town of Tzaneen, and the rest of the group were out for a walk on Friday afternoon when they came across the herd.

A source told Netwerk24 that Botha shot at three elephant cows as they stormed the hunters.

A fourth cow stormed from the side, lifted Botha with her trunk and was fatally shot by another hunter. The elephant then collapsed onto Botha.

The South African specialised in big game safaris and often took wealthy foreigners on hunts for lions, leopards and other animals after founding his own company in the 1980s.

Friends paid tribute to him on Facebook, where one wrote: "RIP Theunis Botha. Our heartfelt condolences to Carike and family. He was a great man! So sad!"

Another friend added: "A legend has fallen but will never be forgotten... It's with a sad heart that we say goodbye to you Oom Theunis Botha. Our deepest condolences to the family. May God be with you all in this difficult time."

Critics of big game hunting responded with little sympathy.

One person wrote: "You should be crying for the innocent elephant that was senselessly murdered not this idiot hunter who deserved what he got."

Botha's friend, Scott van Zyl, 44, was killed by crocodiles during a hunt in Zimbabwe last month, Netwerk24 reported.

Botha's company, called Theunis Botha Big Game Safaris and Hounds, as he was known to hunt with dogs, is a family operation run with his wife Carike.

In 1878 his ancestors moved into a wild and rugged region of South Africa, becoming cattle ranchers and hunters, the firm's website states.

It adds: "In the year of ’66 Theunis became the latest addition to his family, and was privileged to be raised in the ways of the bush and its people."

He served in the South African infantry during the Angolan War and left the Army after reaching the rank of sergeant.

After returning home he started offering hunting safaris in 1989 to pay for his studies, and completed a degree in psychology and anthropology in 1991.

His first client, Bill Reynolds, from the US state of Montana, hunted a leopard on the family's game ranch bordering Kruger National Park after his hounds picked up the animal's scent, the website states.

It added that Botha pioneered traditional European-style Monteria hunts, where game are driven with dogs, in South Africa.

Peace to his family as they morn this sad loss.

@Christiaan VH , as sad as it is, life needs to carry on, his dogs will still be with us in camp this season. The family will need all the support possible and by still using the BIG GAME HOUNDS, we will be helping.

As Bruce Springsteen once sang.." we take care of our own"
Thank you Mr Leach

My condolences to his family and friends.

Peace and prayers for the family.

Very tragic. I am not being nosey but I am praying the family has been taken care of for the future. It is upsetting to think about this family left without his love and financial support.
