Greetings,

Lars is my name. Just started responding here. Joined a few months ago, figured I'd share some pics from my latest safari to introduce myself:

Incidentally the young fellow with the vaalie is Ryan Pienaar, the PH who showed me that beautiful creature.

Welcome to AH Lars! Nice to have you with us!

Thanks! I had two really great PHs and one hell of a run of luck

Welcome to the posting side.

Lars that is one hell of a run of luck. That Vaalie is amazing and the Bushbuck to boot.

What's the story of the hunt on that Vaalie? Please….

It was one of those things you hear about happening to other people but not me. It happened to me.

We'd had a VERY successful hunt in KZN (see kudu and bushbuck) and had 2 days together in the stormberg before I switched PHs for the duration. There were quite a lot of vaalies around but few mature rams. Still we managed to locate a 8 incher. Trouble was he located us first. We worked him for a day and a 1/2 but he wasn't having it and we lost him. With nothing to lose but our sanity, we cast about a few other basins and saw a promising herd. After a round-about drive and a careful stalk, the ram wasn't what we hoped. Getting near dark we sat near the truck and glassed for whatever we could see. We saw 3 ewes milling about a small rock outcrop and for a bit it looked like we were done. Then Ryan saw an ear flick in some grass. The exact words were "Jesus, he's a Monster!" The longest 2 minutes I've ever had hunting commenced. First he broke cover at 360 yards on a full gallop. We hopped in the truck and drove towards the mountain he made for. I couldn't track them but Ryan never lost them. Somehow they stopped at about 250 yards from where we parked. I was not aware crosshairs could bounce like that. I was shaking pretty bad by now and took a shot right over his back. Unfathomably, he actually ran CLOSER. he stopped at 200 yards, proceeded to turn quartering to us and somehow I got my trigger pull right. Ryan said his legs flew right out from under him and that was that. Many beers that night to make the shakes go away.
I am getting chills just writing this

Thanks for sharing those great photos and trophies ................. the only down side is that now I'm longing to return to Africa even more!

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
