Hello all,

Only joined the site to ask a question about a broken stock on one of my rifles.
So inspired by the help and feedback in record time so here we go with the intro.
Born in Kenya, been in Tanzania for 16 years and work in the Ruaha National Park as a walking safari guide where my wife and I run a small safari outfit.
Hunted for the pot on Occassion when training many years ago in South Africa but must say it never grabbed me, I sit literally "on the other side of the fence" our Park is surrounded by Game Reserves on all sides which of course hunting is the main activity and as an ardent conservationist have much interest in the topic. Please nobody panic, many of my friends are hunters and I am incredibly well versed and on the front lines of seeing the good it does from a conservational point of view and am constantly arguing the value of it with 90% of my guests who are simply ill informed. If it wasn't for these hunting Game Reserves the farmers would be banging on my front door and chopping down everything. In fact my mentor many years ago was Brian Nicolson whom garnered fame back in the days of old when he properly introduced commercialised sport hunting in East Africa, particularly the Selous Game Reserve which essentially saved the entire 50,000 Sq Km from becoming a ground nut plantation. (His autobiography - "The last of old Africa" is a riveting read and will be up most of your alleys!!!
Other than tourism now spend much of my time training rangers/parks personnel in heavy caliber weapon usage/safety and teaching them to conduct safe walking safaris with something other than their trusty AK47's!!!!
Most of my day however I guess is just spend with my guests walking with Elephants in this beautiful Park. Through my ranger training projects now I am getting more and more interest in the weapons themselves. My use of them is purely defensive, short range stuff for surprise attacks purely for the saving of human life.

Pleasure to meet you all and have already learnt loads after posting only one thread - Keep it up, this is an inspiring resource of a website!!!!

Welcome to AH, very interesting life you have.

Nice hearing from your perspective. Regards

Welcome aboard MoliTZ. Like you said, "you may be (slightly) on the other side of things" but in one respect you are the same as the dangerous Game Professional Hunters we routinely hire. You use your rifle to prevent the loss of human life. Your recognition of the "good" that hunters do / bring to the eco-system is good enough for us. You might find some "Rambo(s)" in this group, but they are very few and far between. Most of us believe and behave in accordance with the precept "that hunters are the true conservationists."

To help you with your task of training "rangers" in the use of larger bore rifles, you might consider sending a PM to Lon Denny at Tokoloshe Safaris. I'm betting he can and will share some of his insight with you.

Welcome aboard. Your website is impressive. Makes me want to add a trip like that to a hunt someday. Very nice sir!

Welcome welcome welcome

Hello and welcome!

Hello & what a great intro that was, I'm a Guide/PH myself & love hunting but never was that keen on the killing part (do kill a fair bit however) I think it must be great to walk about showing nature & animals to folks & you can do it again with the same animals next time/day, can't do that our way lol !

Thanks for posting !

MoliTZ, a very interesting and inviable life you have. Thanks for understanding the value of hunting as a necessary part of conservation even though you do not choose to participate.
Looking forward to your input.

Welcome MoliTZ

What is the current elephant situation in Ruaha and surrounds?

Are they recovering from the poaching?

Do you see any big bulls?

Thank you

Mitch

Welcome MoliTZ

Can you tell us how the elephant population is doing in Ruaha and
surrounds ?
Are they recovering from the poaching?

Do you see any older bulls?

Thanks

Mitch

Tried to buy the book you mentioned but sadly the copies available were a bit out of my budget just now. Someday. . . And someday I hope to see Tanzania live and in person and walk with you among elephants—and yes to hunt plains game. I’m glad you found us and I hope both our dreams come true!

Welcome to AH. When and where did you work with Brian Nicholson?

The Southern Highlands was once my home. The Usangu was our backyard. The Ruaha area holds a special place in my heart. You are fortunate to live where you live.

I remember when the area was gazetted and became a National Park in 1967. Prince Bernard of the Netherlands opened the park. Eric Balson was the game warden over the area based in Mbeya. Williamson was the game warden in Iringa if memory serves me right.

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
