Well I think we have determined that if there is a rifle out there with an issue I will find it. I have been through SEVERAL rifles trying to find what I want to use on this trip, and hopefully any future trips to Africa. So after all the different rifles I have worked with, and had worked on, I decided I might as well try this Blaser business because they never have any issues, right? That is unless I buy one. To keep a long story short I purchased and R8 Jaeger minus the barrel and I decided to go with a 458 Lott barrel from Van at Top Dog Guns Global, who is a great fellow to deal with and will have all my future Blaser business.
The barrel arrived via UPS about 30 minutes before dark so I give it a quick cleaning and screw it on the rifle and crack open a box of factory Hornady ammo I had planned to shoot up for brass and I attached the QD mount with 1-4 scope and go drag my target into the yard. First couple rounds all is normal. I fired the 3rd and get ready to go check the target so I proceed to safe the rifle but the cocking lever is already on safe. I thought maybe I did it and didn't remember it. After a few more test rounds I come to the conclusion pretty quickly that the rifle is kicking itself on safe. I could not believe it, but it was getting dark and so I had to pause until the next morning. I took it out the next morning and fired one shot and had the same result. I was extremely unhappy as you might imagine at this point. I calle blaser-USA and press 2 for customer service and got a 10 minute voicemail about all the different ways to send in a rifle and I was now VERY unhappy. I thought I would give it one more try and a fellow named Josh picks up on the second ring. I explain the situation and he says he has never heard of one doing that, but it most certainly should not be doing that and t he will put me a brand new bolt in the mail right now and if I would just swap the bolt head and put my old bolt carrier in the box and send it back to him he would appreciate it. I could not believe how easy that was, bolt arrived that Friday as promised. I am now 9 rounds down range with the new bolt and have had no more malfunctions.
I am impressed with the system, everything from its design and ease of swapping parts, like in this case where I didn't have to track down a gunsmith and ship off the entire rifle. Their customer service seems to be top notch in the event that you do have an issue. I am looking forward to further testing with the rifle, but I may have found a permanent companion for my future hunting trips.

i guess thats part of what we pay for with blaser

Bad story with a happy ending. Nice to know that someone cares about service. It is a good thing that you do not live in Zimbabwe. You could have sent them your bolt, but they would not be able to send you one.

Same in the UK. You need an individual authorisation to purchase any pressure bearing firearm part. Takes about 4 months in my area at the moment. Anywhere from 2 weeks to 18 months elsewhere.

Good to see the Blaser outcome though.

Did they tell you what went wrong with the original bolt ? Every manufacturer will have a problem occasionally, the good manufacturers are the ones who fix it quick with minimum inconvenience.
I just put it in the mail back to them yesterday, but I included my phone number and I would like to hear from them if they do figure out what was causing it.

Nice to see a company (regardless of the price of the product) step up and provide proper customer service. Glad it worked out for you.

Great to hear it all turned out well!

You had me nervous there at the start of your post! Will Blaser help? Won't they? Is it another nightmare story!? Oh no, what if they don't help?! What if something breaks on my Blaser?!!?

In the two occasions that I have had to call Blaser USA service, they have been most helpful and gracious. My issues were both operator induced. I am sure there were several chuckles around the office after I got off the phone. However, I left with my problem solved and and my self-esteem intact.

Now if you ever need to seemed in the whole rifle, that’s easy too. Sign up at BlaserClub, request a work authorization and they email you the label!

Here is another shout out to Van at Top Dog Guns Global. He has helped me on numerous occasions including a situation that was clearly not his or Blaser’s fault with no charge. He is a true gentlemen and I highly recommend him.

When I read the title, I said to myself, oh boy, here we go. I was expecting a horror story with a very, very bad ending. Glad to hear of their great customer service, some companies should learn from this. Good for you, and glad everything worked out. Kudos to Blaser Customer Service! Maybe you could send Blaser this link.

I was very much concerned when I called them that-that was exactly the problem. I was thinking these guns are supposed never have issues like that and I was afraid it was some form of operator error, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me what I could be doing wrong. Turns out it was indeed that bolt. I really like the modular style of this rifle. Like an AR 15 you can pretty much swap parts at will.

I may do that. The fellow named Josh that I talked with definitely deserves an atta-boy.

I dont own a Blaser.. but its stories like this, and others I have seen posted here and elsewhere that keep bringing an R8 back to the table for consideration for me (I have often contemplated selling off several members of the herd, then buying an R8 professional and a compliment of 4 barrels.. that would result in having 1 platform capable of hunting everything on the planet from dik-dik to elephant.. there are definitely some merits to a system like that)...

thanks for sharing!

Happy it was worked out! I would have thought the bolt housing not the bolt. Interesting and something I'll have to look at better.

RE: The comments regarding opening this thread with dread about an R8 nightmare/CS horror story.

True confessions, as someone that doesn't 'get' the R8 I opened it with a tiny bit of glee at the thought of an R8 nightmare/CS horror story.

Glad I was wrong and happy that @Backyardsniper got his issue resolved so quickly. Sounds like Blaser has excellent customer service. Good to know. However (you knew there'd be a 'but'), at that price point they had better stand behind their products. ;)

I will say that any mechanical thing can malfunction regardless of how much the item cost. That doesn't mean Blaser or the R8 are flawed. It's just one example. As I've said many times, I'm not an R8 fan but I gladly concede they're outstanding rifles.

Bloody hell.

It was the bolt housing that caused the issue. The bolt head had to be swapped over into the new housing. When I was speaking with Justin about this, I was surprised he was having the problem. I've owned 6 different R8s and have never had a single issue. But, on my next safari, I will definitely be bringing along an extra bolt housing and bolt head just for peace of mind. Only weighs a pound, and takes up very little space, so why not? It's almost as good as bringing another complete rifle, in my mind. The vast majority of the small moving parts are in the bolt housing and bolt head, so not much to go wrong with the rest of the rifle.

I read an older thread that mentioned you having some 9.3x64 brass. Do you still have some? I am looking for 100 pcs, maybe 200.
A wonderful trip to Hungary with a very special friend !
