Big Bore Addiction Group

IdaRam, the 450/400 NE 3" is a nice cartridge but I felt it was lacking so I switched to the 500/416 NE 3.25". the 500/416 NE cartridge gives you power in a very affordable package (.416 bullets are available and inexpensive). if the 500/416 NE isn't your thing then id recommend the 450 NE 3.25".

My name is Travis and I started my addiction 5 years or so ago, I was a longtime fan of big bores and hunting Africa, I had purchased a marlin lever action in 444 marlin, then moved to a marlin guide gun in 45-70, that got boring and about a year ago I jumped up to a ruger number one in 450/400 nitro express. I sold that rifle and ended up buying a cz 550 safari in 375 and 458 Lott both at the same time. Then came a ruger guide gun in 416 ruger and in the near future is the possibility of a 9.3x74r or 9.3x62 being added to the battery. I see no end in sight for this addiction, I am, err I mean, my addiction is apparently trying to build as many combinations of safari rifle batteries as possible.

My name is Peter but I'm not addicted, but I have 375 H&H, 375 Ruger, 375 RUM, 404 Jefferies, 416 Taylor, 2-416 Rigbys, 425 WR, 458 Win Mag, 458 Lott, 470 NE, 505 Gibbs. In older calibers 45/70 and 405 Win. But I am not addicted.

Yup, denial is what all good addictions are built on :D Right there with ya Spooksar!
Hey Matt85, thanks for the advice. How do the 3 cartridges mentioned stack up recoil wise? I DO really like the .416 bore and have been considering the 500/416 as a possibility as well. Mostly just dreaming at this point. But one of these days... :)

Whew! Good to see that I'm not the only one with this devilish addiction. My first was the smallish .338 Win Mag but I've added a 9.3x74R, .458 Win Mag, .416 Rigby and a .450/400 NE (All in Ruger Model 1s) and just picked up a .416 Ruger African that I'm dying to shoot but work keeps getting in the way... I'm afraid that when I head to Africa, I'm going to be flustered on what to take...

the 500/416 NE is in the same family as the other 416's so the recoil is pretty much the same. I haven't had a chance to try the 450 NE 3.25" but im told the recoil is pretty similar to the 416's but a little slower so it might be a little more comfortable.

the 450/400 NE 3" falls into the same recoil range as the 375 H&H which makes it pretty mild. however like I said its a little on the weak side for a DG cartridge. a 400gr bullet at 2050fps is only generating 3700 ft/lb of energy which falls short of the normal 4000 ft/lb requirement. having said that the 450/400 NE 3" will work very well if used properly at close range.

Ida....that's drug enforcement..lol. Hope you are enjoying it. I'm still getting used to my new 470. It's healthy.

I don't know that I'm an "addict".....however, I wasn't back from my first safari but about 24 hours before I bought my 375 H&H... Since then I have bought about 500 rounds of premium ammo. I'm not an addict. I just have an addictive personality...:)

Ida..I repeat and I mean repeat..DO NOT GET a double in 450/400. It's way to addictive.

The 450/400 3" has killed anything in Africa more times than one can count. The only place it might not be perfect, is in elephant hunting, and still has done well there under right conditions.ie. good marksmanship, proper bullet, etc.

Damn you guys!!!!!! All this talk about doubles is starting to make my wallet hurt. I am even starting to find the heym website popping up in my google searches......I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW IT IS GETTING THERE!!!!!!!!

they are invading my subconscious........ssssshhhhhhhh......what was that?

BIG TIME DENIAL ! This would be so funny if it wasn't so true! But as long as you have a place to sleep and food to eat, you should "waste" as much as you can on more guns!

I forgot my 450 Rigby and my 450/400 Ruger no 1

Hi Heym! How are things? Hope you are doing well!
Thank you for the advice on the 450/400! Sounds like the voice of experience talking :D Guess I can't say I wasn't warned!
I'm loving the RSM's. I haven't shot the 375 yet, but the '06 shoots like a house a fire! I had some 150gr Remington green box and some 165 GameKing handloads on the shelf and it shoots sub-MOA all day long with both of them. Getting ready to test some 180 Accubonds and some 190gr LR Accubonds and see how it likes the heavier bullets and H-4350 powder. The 375 is going to get stoked up with 270gr A-Frames when I get a little more free time. Looking forward to trying it out on Wildebeest and Gemsbok next year.
I'm glad to hear you and your .470 are getting "acquainted" :) I suspect "healthy" may be a modest way of putting it.
All the best my friend. Stay safe and shoot straight.

Dang Spooksar, that is how you know you have a real addiction problem! Don't make us stage an AH intervention :sneaky:

Ida, glad your doing well and enjoying your rifles. I do like happy customers!

Very happy! It was a pleasure doing business with you Heym88.

I do wish I had listened to my Momma.
But, please don't tell her that I own several large bore rifles and that I'm planning my 5th Safari.
She only thinks I play piano in an Anchorage whorehouse.
