Another Airline Announces Decision to Discontinue the Shipment of Hunting Trophies

According to a memorandum authored by the Africa Director of Lufthansa Cargo, the company has decided to stop its shipment of hunting trophies from "all Africa (Johannesburg Airport) origins." The memo indicates that this change will take place "with immediate effect."

Lufthansa is the third airline to announce changes to its trophy shipment policies, following similar announcements made by South African Airways and Emirates' cargo divisions. In contrast, Delta Air Lines put out a statement on May 13, 2015 in which the airline confirmed that it would not discontinue its practice of transporting hunting trophies. The airline stated that "Delta accepts hunting trophies in accordance with all U.S. domestic and international regulations. . . ."

As people move farther and become more removed from agrarian roots they view the world in a more sanitized way. While animals die to provide them food and clothing they are able to detach themselves from the act of killing and consuming to live. How many animals die each year due to loss of habitat because people want another shopping mall, another housing subdivision.

Some give a few dollars to organizations to say they help save wildlife even though most of the dollars go to salaries of the top managers. How many give their time to actually improve habitat? The "tame" urban dweller is the first to complain if birds crap on their cars or rabbits eat their garden. When deer in the US start eating everyone's landscaping the "animal lovers" cry for sharpshooters to remove the problem animals. The same "animal lovers" don't want mean hunters to shoot the deer. They somehow feel the paid killer is preferable to the hunter who cares deeply for wildlife.

So is this just a policy for Africa I wonder?

In other words, would Lufthansa still ship a trophy from Germany to the states as an example. I get that Africa is where the volume comes from. Just curious.

I have had my trophies brought home in checked baggage. I happen to know the right people who travel regular to Natal who know the right people in the Natal offices to get the paper work done in short time. If things get any worse, I will mostly hunt the Natal area and get things home in the belly of the plane.

Go get 'ER' done now before it is too late!!

Roger, it's not about getting paper work done quickly, its more about having trophies prep properly to avoid deseases. Or am I misunderstanding your post.

In future I will only use airlines that haven't banned transporting trophies. SAA runs at a loss every year(major loss) can they really afford to lose even more business??

There are a few things I'd like to address after hearing all the comments:
1. Royal, the ban of hunted trophies on Lufthansa is worldwide and not exclusive to Africa
2. Roger, there was no mention of clearing the trophies into the US, therefore, how were you going to get USFWL, USDA, CDC and Customs to clear your trophies for you?
3. Simon, you are absolutely correct. It is about the preparation of the trophies to avoid the spread of disease from other countries.
4. Flatwater Bill, yes you can contact Lufthansa to be heard as many hunters are doing. See Below announcement that we sent to all our shippers worldwide:

"Thank you for your request. ‎For Lufthansa Cargo animal welfare is of utmost importance. And Lufthansa Cargo strictly adheres to all national and international legal requirements. Since many years, our policies are very restrictive: We do not transport large game trophies and, of course, no trophies of any endangered species. In addition, Lufthansa Cargo has decided not to transport any trophies of the African fauna, e.g. lions, elephants and rhinos, in or out of Africa – including legally hunted or legally acquired trophies.

Makes absolutely no sense to do this. It only compounds to there losses. It's unbelievable that theses major airlines would bow to unsubstantiated claims the anti hunting organizations spit at them. It seems to me SCI has its hands full. It will be interesting to see just how much SCI can get done to reverse some of these positions.
