Must see's in Johannesburg

I am traveling to RSA with my daughter in May and will be in Jo'burg a couple days. Just wondering what are must see's for me and my 20 year old daughter?Staying near Tambo airport and no car.

An excellent question sir. I have never been able to tour in the city as my hunting has taken up all the available time. I am very interested to hear what others have to say on this question.

You may want to consider contacting Africa Sky or Afton Guest House. I believe they may have some options for you. Being unfamiliar with the city, I would recommend you go with someone who knows their way around.

There is mall close to the airport is really nice, very modern and I am sure a 20 yr old girl could find some shopping there. I can’t remeber the name of it, but we walked through it and had a bite to eat at Hooters on the way to the airport after hunting.
The Cradle of Humankind at Maropeng is about 30min from the airport (depending on traffic) and is defiantly worth a visit to the museum and the Sterkfontein Caves if you all are into archaeology at all. We did the museum and the caves and it took about 1/2 day.
I have a friend that just spent a month this winter living and skateboarding in Johannesburg. He is a skateboard finatic and has traveleved (and skateboarded) all 7 continents. He has lots of crazy stories about inner city Joburg. So my advice is to hook up with a reputable tour company. It will be some of the best insurance you can buy. Have fun!!

Lots to do...but you need transport.
Hook up with a reputable tour agency and see what they have to offer:
The cradle of Human Kind is worth it.
The apartheid museum as well
Sandton city Mall has most of everything .. great shops and restaurants
Montecasino in Fourways...great restaurants and casino for those who like to try their luck and win back the Safari costs!!

The best thing to see in Jo'berg in my opinion is either Highway 4 that takes you to the North West province, or Highway 1 that takes you north toward Limpopo...

Add a trip to the Safari & Outdoor Store. It is in a modern mall as well. It is like Cabela's on steroids when it comes to "African" hunting gear. Their selection of firearms and ammunition is nothing short of amazing.

I was in J'berg last trip and stopped at Apartheid Museum, a couple gun shops, and a few book stores in addition to meeting up with some folks from another non hunting forum.

Used City Lodge to stay at and had them set up a car service to take me around. Was around $50 for car and driver for 3 1/2 hrs. I'm used to NY City and that to me was cheap and much easier than dealing with traffic with a rental.

Had a very nice meal at Pigalle in Bedfordview; prawns and a very good steak was cheap with exchange rate.

If you insist on seeing J0'burg, then see Sandton & Rosebank. You can take the train right from the airport.

Window shopping doesn't cost anything. If you are looking at American and other imported goods I'm sure there shipping and importation costs to be covered. I'm also sure that the vast majority of their customers are locals that see these prices as normal. Have you tried buying Rhino Bullets in the States?

You can always Uber - there are Uber drivers everywhere in Johannesburg.

Also consider Pretoria, which is very close to Joburg - the Union buildings are nice, lots of history. Botanical gardens are also interesting if you would like to learn more about the native flora.

Not really going there but it's not the shop for me for various reasons..they have the widest range of gear for sure and worth a visit...I would recommend Kalahari Arms in Randburg as well..not far from S&O in Rivonia.

Thank you, we will be careful. Uber is very reliable here as well. History and flora are exactly what I was hoping to here about as well as a little shopping.

On my first trip last year I'd recently read a book about Churchill during the Second Boer War and then decided to study the two Boer Wars a bit more. After digesting a couple additional books on the history of SA, I wanted to see the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. Sort of a sore spot for many in the history of SA, but I found it very interesting in context and well worth a half a day if you happen to be up that way. Would be very interesting to do in conjunction with the Apartheid Museum.

Take a stay at The Farm Inn, they have several animals there, including som live lion cubs that you can see right outside their door
