2 Rifle Beater Battery

I just aquired a very good condition Polish Radom M98 in 8mm. I wanted for the action as it is un tapped and "scrubbed". After seeing it and reading this thread, I'll be taking her to the range before I make any decisions...

I have a Husqvarna 1640 in 8mm. Not tapped, open sights. It’s a lot of fun.
 
my to go rifle for bad weather- and rough ground is a SA LH rem 700 with 20" barrel with a 2.5x8 leupold in 7mm08. it has never left me down and i have used it on most animals i have shot, short of big bears i have never felt under gunned.

I have had super cheap rifles, I have some pretty expensive ones. I will select a howa 1500 and or weatherby vanguard 9 times out of 10. They're super accurate and if it gets banged up, I look at the damage as a character flaw rather than a depreciation on my investment. From .243 win to .375 ruger, I have all but a 7mm wsm. (And if anyone has one they want to rehome ... hit me up!). Happy hunting!
 
My .416 Taylor is in a Hogue Over molded stock. I have built 25-06's on Hogue over molded stocks for my grandsons. The 25-06's are under 1" MOA. I had to shorten the stocks for the boys when they were young but now they are 6'2" to 6'3" and their LOP requires a longer stock. The nice part of using a Hogue over molded stock is that it is easy to just buy another stock for an adult and replace it.
 
My original battery of hunting rifles from the late 70’s, early 80’s consisted of three Browning FN Mausers; .300 Win, .338 Win, .458 Win. I wouldn’t call them “beaters” but they sure have their share of bumps & bruises. Then I went with a brace of M70’s; a .375 Holland & Holland and a 7mm Shooting Times Westerner. The STW still travels with me but my .500 Schüler, .416 Rigby, and .470 NE have been my mainstay for years now.

My "beater" rifle is an R8 with a synthetic stock. I can configure it currently in one of half a dozen chamberings from .257 WBY to .375. With its plazma DLC steel coating and polymer magazine, it is more rust resistant than stainless. It is about as indestructible as any firearm as I have ever owned. If I need two of them, I pack another barrel.

I found a brand new Weatherby vanguard. 375 h and h years ago, couldn't turn it down, shoots so well I cerakote the action and barrel and slapped a leupold hd5 on it, fantastic beater rifle and a tack driver
 
I rescued and re-barreled two abused Mannlicher Schoenauers, so their collector value is gone. But if you strip the inside inletting and then soak it with AcraGlass liquid cut with 30% acetone, it will soak deeply into the grain and then it is waterproof with a capital W! A beater can be a fine functional gun/action that performs flawlessly, yet you lose no sleep over the dings. That's what I prefer.

Quoting Don Heath in one part of the "PH time trials" thread, "there is no use offering a Boer rubbish at any price." If it doesn't work right/shoot right, who wants it for a beater anyway?
 
My Ruger Alaskan in .375 Ruger definitely qualifies as a beater rifle and if you pair it with my REM M700 in 7mm REM Mag that I had ceracoted and added a Hogue stock to will be a good 2 beater rifle battery.

I’m still a 300 win mag/458 Lott guy for the 2 gun battery.
I recently picked up a 458 Lott cz 602 that holds 6 and I’m going to have it gun smithed up to possibly leave in Africa for me to visit every year.

I’ve been seriously tempted by a Mannlicher schoenauer Gk lately, I hear nothing but good things. I’d like to have QR rings for it so the kids can shoot too but that seems like a task and a half to find.
 
For me, if a rifle is to nice to use I won’t have it.

Looking at hunting buffalo next year (in Aus) and tossing up what two rifles to take.

Rigby 9.3 is a given, probably the Lee speed 303 for pigs.

My .375 Holland & Holland Magnum Remington Model 700 Kevlar Stock Custom. I got it as a gift from my loving son-in-law. Personally speaking, I would much rather prefer something in a walnut stock with a control round feed action (I managed to do something about the second issue by having McBride’s Guns fit an M16 extractor to it in 2023). But beggars can’t be choosers in our part of the world. To it’s credit, the rifle hasn’t let me down and is pinpoint accurate. I’ve decided that I’m going to keep it but someday hope to restock it with a traditional walnut stock.
 
Yep. It is a Win M70 "Black Shadow" .30-06 Sprg. - MFG Syn. stock, Lyman Iron Sights, Talley Rings , G1 Nikon 3-9x40mm "Buckmaster" , Leather/Canvas Sling , it is paired with a Win M1300 "Speed Pump" 12Ga 21" Bbl - Cyl. - MFG Syn furniture , MFG Iron sights , Weaver Rail , Nikon P-Tac Red Dot
And the larger caliber is a Win M70 XTR .338WinMag - MFG Syn stock, Lyman iron sights, Leupold rings, Leupold VX3 4.5-12x40 .... it would be a .358Win , instead of the .338WM , but I haven't found a replacement for the one I had that now belongs to my Son.
 
When I 1st read your title, I misunderstood the term "Beater". I envisioned long lines of Gurkas beating on metal pans while seeking to drive the Bengal Tiger to my hunting stand atop the Elephant. I missed the mark by a mile or two, lol. Instead of a 416 Rigby or a nice 450NE double rifle, I had to step back and re-think the concept of a "Beater Battery".

The only true Beater rifle I have ever been around was my buddy's old Rem 788 in 308. It had a short 18" bbl and a metal detachable mag and the stock was painted camo with a rattle can. The wood was so ugly that the paint job was an improvement. And it shot lights out. Some time later, he gifted it to his Nephew who still has it.

I have always wanted one of those fuggly little rifles. A nice pair of CZ550's in 30-06 and 458wm or 416R would seem to be one answer.

I have a two rifle battery that I took on my first Safari. A matched pair of FN Browning Mauser action rifles in 308 and 375HH. They are not beaters but get the job done. The 308 is a lovely Medallion Grade and the big rifle is a Safari Grade.
