Having made my first trip I have some different thoughts. Travel doesn’t bother me, it’s the normal experience, but many find that a big hurdle - a lot of Americans don’t leave their state.
For my wife, she was worried it was not safe, as the media tends to demonize so readily these days, and yet was pleasantly surprised. It was her first travel outside of the western world, so that’s to be expected. Nonetheless she found the wealth disparity to be uncomfortable and I get that.
For me, it was a little out of my comfort zone and to some degree I was concerned that the fencing might be a source of a canned hunt as it were. What I found was a place I’d be happy to travel to, and an experience that is far from fenced than the American experience and that perception which colors it in an overly negative light here.
