What did you reload today?

Love it. Can you post a pic of the cartridge? I love all these 9.3 variants.
Straight wall case is 9.3x57r the other is my ugly duckling Swiss martini 9.3x53 Swiss.

Self teaching myself ...to load 35 Whelen. Resizing and trimming no problem. Working on perfect bullet seating depth. Then finally loading. 200 grain barnes ttsx with CFE223.
@Captain Munro
You have chosen an excellent calibre in the Whelen.
As much as I like the 200gn TTSX I personally feel the Whelen really shines with 225 and 250gn bonded bullets.

The 225gn accubonds and Woodleigh PPSP and RNSP hard driven by a healthy dose of CFE223 leave nothing to be desired especially when driven to 2,900fps. This will handle any of the PG in Africa

For game the size of eland I would choose the 250 gn Woodleigh PPSP or RNSP would be guaranteed to punch a big hole in them.
That's just my humble opinion. For some reason I still like the old cup and core and bonded projectiles, they just seem to kill quicker.

Still waiting for a range report on those 6.5mm 160gn round nose mate.
Very curious to see how they go

@sgt_zim would also be interested in the 9.3 258gr stone hammers review.
I loaded up some of those before I went on my safari in 2024 for my Zastava. Didn't end up bringing those, only A Frames.

But I got up to 2505 fps on 62.5 gr of 2000MR and a 22-ish inch BBL (I've measured, but have forgotten, maybe 22.5 or something), you could probably get similar with Big Game. As with any 9.3x62, verify how much extra freebore you have because it's probably quite a lot. You'll run out of mag length before you're on the lands, so you can probably set your COAL to around 3.33 or 3.34". They're long, longer than any 286 gr except TSX, but there's still enough room for 62 or 63 gr of ball powder like 2000MR or Big Game.

I'm guessing I could have gotten to 2600 with them, but if you look at the difference in arc and energy of 2500 vs 2600, I surmised the juice wasn't worth the squeeze, especially since that bullet is one of the higher BC bullets in caliber .366.

The one downside to both those powders is I believe they're right at 2 fps per 1º of temp change. That was another reason I decided to stay at 2500. If I lived and hunted AK exclusively, I probably wouldn't care.

I'll let you know. I have unfortunately only been to the range once since last summer, and that was to introduce the missus to her new 375 H&H. Between church, getting Mom's portion of the estate settled, having my 88 yo dad to visit, trying to get his house sold, etc., just been swamped with things that needed doing rather than things I wanted to do.

Last night was my 2nd night on the loading bench since 2024.

If it doesn't rain Saturday, planning on going back, got the 6.5 stuff sitting on the loading bench as we speak.

I've got reloading "work" piled up. Still need to finish some stuff for the 280 AI and my other son's 308, need to get some North Forks for the 404. Also at the end of my Beartooth Bullets stash of 425 and 525 gr Piledrivers for my 45-70, they're out of business, so I need to find an alternative WFN in the 450 - 500 gr neighborhood.

200 new Starline 44 Special cases FL sized, then loaded with CCI-300 large pistol primers, then flared case mouths enough to just start .429 inch improved Keith bullets that weigh 285 grains, they are heat treated 25 BHN alloy, very hard with a .350" flat meplat.

Case mouths closed via a firm roll crimp at .450 inch, 10grs of Longshot sent them out at 1188 fps, I realize this is way above standard heavy 44 Special loads, but, the little Freedom Arms 44 Special revolver will easily handle these and more if a man see's fit.

You see, if I like a gun, I carry it, carrying it means it HAS to work for woods carry, this 5.5 inch barreled Premier Grade round butt revolver with ebony micarta grips is very easy to like, lightweight and fast handling, it's carried in a cross draw left side butt forward leather holster made by Azula Gun Holsters in South Africa, nicely stowed out of the way for primary right hand carrying of your long gun, recoil even weak side one handed is very easy to manage, don't think any woods animal in US or Canada, even the great bears of Alaska are gonna buck this load, it will drive extremely deep and straight wrecking everything in it's path with the large flat meplat.

You can burn all you care to waste in a snuff can at 25 yards off a rear sandbag rest, great fun with the little 44 cal popper today.
I’ve loaded a 260 Keith H&G 503 to 1130 in 4 5/8 Blackhawk flattop with 17 grains of N110.
I’ve been loading 8 grains of Longshot behind the same bullet for 1000 in my Colt new frontier.
I like my bullets quite a bit softer than you do however.

A good load for the 308 is 150gn accubond ( or other 150) loaded with a max of 50gn of CFE223 ( THIS IS MAX SO WORK UP FROM 47GN).
This load gives over 2,900 fps in my son's Howa with a 22"tube and 0.3" groups.

I know this sounds crazy but like everyone else Swift A Frame bullets are non existent. I got lucky and somehow got an email from them of availability limit two boxes in 9.3x62. I have my custom load for this bullet which is not what is in the two boxes of fully loaded ammo…so I am pulling the bullets dumping the powder and reloading my own Big Game load that clover leafs at 100 yards. I have powder to last a lifetime but not Swift A Frame bullets. Call me crazy!!!

I bought 4 boxes of 286 gr about 3 years ago. At that time, those were the only A Frames from the "heavy rifle bullets" group available at all, and were consistently the only ones they'd had available for a couple years going back to the scamdemic.

Still have 3 boxes left after LD and a safari.

Loaded some 650gr Cutting Edge Bullet monolithics in hopes they’d run in my .577 BPE…sadly, the slow twist in my rifle would not stabilize them and they keyholed and landed willy nilly all over the target. Dammit…

Woodleigh 650gr softs shoot well out of this particular rifle. I’m down to only about a dozen of them and they haven’t made any more since their fire.

I’ll post a want to buy but if anyone has any PLEASE send me a note. I leave in a month and would love to take this rifle on safari.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
