Most Coveted Animal in Africa?

I said earlier a bongo which is true but realistically the most obtainable financially may be a sitatunga...
I've been researching that approach as well. I feel like sitatunga hunts are the antelope version of a leopard bait hunt but in the daylight. I don't know of an antelope hunt that requires more prep work than a sitatunga. From what I can tell they are about 1/2 the cost of a bongo.

Please understand that my deepest passion is bird hunting. So when I say African Pygmy goose, I am being honest and serious. It’s a dream I truly hope to fulfill-

I’m with you in loving birds. If this was outside of Africa capercaillie would be high on my list.

That's another animal you rarely see in trophy rooms. Most guys don't even know what it is.

This is an easy one.

If you were to pick just one animal that you could hunt, outside of common PG, what would it be? This would likely be a high ticket item, to include DG and some of the more majestic and less commonly taken animals, or just difficult to hunt.

I always appreciate the reports about Bongo, Lord Derby Eland, Big 5, and Dry Land Hippo, I know there are a bunch more and that’s what I want to hear from you about.
Lord Derby Eland for sure! Purely majestic beast.

A big bull elephant in the 80 /90 pound range. 2nd would have to be a Lord Derby eland but a true world class one. I've been blessed with the SCI #3 handgun Livingston eland and I'd like to get a Lord Derby for a matched set.

The most coveted? A 100+ pound elephant (on each side) is probably the Shangri-la. Guys I know with almost unlimited resources, like CK, hunt for them every year but that’s out of my league. I am very happy with my 76 pounder and I may never get one bigger.

A wild lion with a nice mane and a big, mature bongo were (and still are) at or near the top for me. I’ve got them both but will hunt lion again in Tanzania in 2028 and I’m tempted to get another bongo but doubt I will. For those of you yet to experience it, there’s something incredible and indescribable about walking up on a big lion you’ve just shot. It is something I will never forget and hope to repeat. If you can swing it, I recommend going before we get a new presidential administration.

I’ve got upcoming hunts for mountain nyala and LDE and those have always been very coveted by me with a slight edge to mountain nyala because I love mountain hunting.

Man, if I had to pick just one animal to hunt in Africa, outside the usual plains game routine, and knowing I might only get one shot at a true bucket-list trip, it would hands-down be the Lord Derby's Giant Eland in the savannas of northern Cameroon.

.

Giant forest hog would be my choice, closely followed by an old, old bongo bull, closely followed by a 15" plus warthog ! That would make me a very happy hunter !

Please don’t kill me verbally for asking this but is leopard hunting fun? I have been told by more than one guy way more experienced than me that it is boring. Sitting in a dark blind for hours unable to move or talk or read or cough or sneeze or fart sounds incredibly — well, boring. I understand the 30 seconds before and the 15 minutes after the shot are exhilarating but the rest of the time spent sitting and waiting is the part that concerns me. What do the rest of you think? I’m heading to Limpopo this summer for first buff, after that I don’t know. Maybe lion or croc. HELP!
If I could only hunt one animal in Africa it would be leopard. In 2018 I set my mind to harvesting one due to all the concerns with future imports into the US. Unlike others that were able to hunt a few minutes or a few days this became the nemesis of my hunting career.

From July 2018 until September 2019 I went to Africa five times to hunt leopard in Namibia and Zimbabwe. Finally taking my leopard the last day of the hunt in September 2019.

I guess you can say for me it is addicting and very expensive however the commitment finally worked out.

Wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide.

Lion

For me, it would be led by a really good lion, probably from Zambia but the cost is getting so high I probably won’t ever do it. I’ve been fortunate to hunt them twice, in Zimbabwe & Botswana, and would love to do one more lion hunt.

A big elephant bull is also on the list and I’ll be doing that in a few years with Alan Vincent. He just guided a Texan client to a really good bull in Zim and I want to hunt the same block as he’s been telling me about it for quite a while. I’ve shot a couple bulls with Alan’s father, Roy, and taking one now with Alan will be very meaningful for both of us.

Of the plains game, I really want to hunt for a great lesser kudu. I’ve always wanted a lesser going clear back to my first African hunt in 1983. I was disappointed to learn they didn’t exist in Zimbabwe!

Bongo… All you guys mentioning Bongo, keep an eye out for a new thread I’ll be starting soon. It may be your opportunity to achieve that dream!

That’s a tough question. I have a little Africa experience….enough to know that I can’t afford my dream hunts which are a couple. First one would be a very large trophy bull elephant 80+ done old school by spending 15-20 miles a day on my feet carrying a heavy rifle and really suffering for the chance of victory.

The second would be the same type hunt for a fully mature large male lion, stalked up to within 100 yards or closer.

I love the idea of a lessor kudu, bongo, mountain nyala….but I’m also not willing to pay for them either.

Of course I am talking about vast country wilderness hunts.

I would imagine both of these hunts can be done….but I cannot afford it, that I am sure of.

I'm in this camp. For me it is more about where do I want to hunt and what experience do I want to have. From that perspective Niassa and Tanzania are very high on my list.

I have buffalo (this year) and elephant (2028) booked. After that if I had to choose by species, lesser kudu and mountain nyala are really intriguing.
I reckon that from a country perspective, few, if any can match Ethiopia.
Mountain Nyala, Melelik’s bushbuck, Giant forest hog, Northern gerenuk, Abysynian greater kudu, Lesser kudu, Beisa oryx, Salt’s dik-dik, Somering gazelle etc, etc, etc…

Been fascinated by the place all my life.

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
