The Old Shikari Interview With Kawshik Rahman For 2021

B) .315 bore bolt operation rifle , built on Lee Enfield type mechanism ( or action ) with five cartridges in Magazine
I heard that they are not so good...
Is this correct?
Why?

You can own any fire arm legally except pistols in 9 millimeter Parabellum cartridge and rifles in .303 bore cartrid.
I think this is, because the army/police use that calibers.
Correct?

You can own any fire arm legally...
"To own" means that you can have them at home or you can transportet them to hunt / sport-shooting.
Can use have them "on the street" also, for protection, pp.?

However , in terms of local availability...
That means: You can buy/own in theorie an .375 HH, but it is not on the market.
"Only" the .22 / .25 / .32 / pp.

You are correct with everything that you have said , yes.
The weapons manufactured by Ishapore Arms Factory use very inferior steel and engineering methods.

THE BEST RIFLE AND CALIBER
You have written - in your other statements / in other threads - that you have an great / big reputations with the rifles witch come swith your clients from all over the world.
In your option - based on many years as an hunter in old India -, witch guns, calibers and ... are good?
Witch not?
Why?

You have also some expirience with slugs / shootgun amo from Germany.
Brenneke? Or?
Why are this products are so good?
You use them - with slugs - also for tiger and ele, I think...?

I have never shot an elephant .
I have only used 12 bore rifled slug bullets twice . It came from a box of Eley Alphamax rifled slug bullets which were left over by a client . He left five behind. I took three and my former partner took two. I used one to kill a Gaur and l used two to kill a Royal Bengal tiger .
These were Brenekke slug bullets , yes.
Brenekke slug bullets are very effective for leopard , but they are inadequate for Royal Bengal tigers ,as they will only give you six inches of penetration at a distance of ten yards . If you are forced to use shot-gun slugs for a Royal Bengal tiger , then you must aim for the region between both the eyes and wait till it is fifteen feet away.
My favorite caliber for all round use , based upon the rifles which l have seen used in the field , is the magnum .375 cartridge by Holland and Holland . This is followed by the 9.3 millimeter mauser which can be used for everything safely , except a Gaur above 1800 pounds .
Regarding the worst rifle , l am not a very opinionated man . At my age , one learns to respect most fire arms , as long as you understand their limitations . Of course , some rifles are better suited to some tasks than others . It is all dependent on what you wish to hunt .
For double barrel rifles for shooting dangerous animals , however , l am firm in the view that such a rifle should have barrels of less than 26 inches in length , no automatic safety and double triggers .
I equally respect both bolt operation rifles and double barrel rifles , but the only place where a double barrel rifle has a decided advantage over the bolt operation , is when pursuing wounded leopards into dense vegetation.

Bull Hunter , this article details Gaurs.

Thank you.
I had read it, in your thread "Hunting, Weapons... for the Indian Buffalo (Gaur)"
(Great / same Infos as you wrote here in your last two statements.)

You wrote there, that a client lost his live in an hunt.
Did you had written this story in an other thread also?
Did that happend regulary? Or - hopefully - only one time?
How often did you / your friend / an client was injured during this hunts in old India?

Thank you.

I am fortunate to say that none of my clients were ever killed under my watch. Only one ever got injured by a Gaur and he suffered some broken ribs.
My late Shikari partner , Karim Chowdhury got bitten in the leg by a leopard in 1969 .
I am fortunate I that l was never injured during my career as a professional Shikari . I received a few bruises now and then , but no serious injury , by the grace of God.
An American client , however , guided by my late colleague , Rongon Daas did get killed by a Royal Bengal tiger , which he had attempted to kill with a .220 Swift caliber model 70 rifle from Winchester. I was not there during the actual incident , as l was guiding another client at the time . However , l had seen the client alive and l later saw his corpse after the incident had taken place .

...even it is a sad story, atragical lost, did you have more details?

Sir
The client was a believer in light , fast velocity bullets and had a theory that it would work for a 500 pound weight Royal Bengal tiger. Rongon Daas was his professional Shikari . The client shot the tiger accurately behind the shoulder. However , the bullet fragmented in the rock hard muscles of the tiger without reaching a vital organs. The tiger attacked him and savaged him to death .

Tragicly, Sir.

And then?
The police arrived?
Is somebody "goes to prison"?
Did this prof. shikari lost his job? Or did you work again?

Did you hear of other (hunting/shooting)story, in witch a shikari, client, huntre, local lost his life?

Rongon Daas was arrested by the police and he was hung by the neck until dead , because he let his client die. Back in those days , a professional Shikari could be imprisoned or even hung to death , if he allowed his client to get hurt or killed negligently. Rumors had begun to surface that Rongon had abandoned his client to deal with the wounded Royal Bengal tiger alone , while Rongon Daas fled for his life . However , as l was not there at the scene , l do not wish to slander my deceased colleague by repeating rumours.
I had a tracker lose one ear when he was attacked by a wounded leopard , but he had survived .
I have heard of a few other incidents of clients losing their lives during a Shikar , however l was not personally present and only heard of the stories from surviving members of the Shikar parties.

Rongon Daas was arrested by the police and....
Oh, that is shocking.
And, in my option, un-fair and against "international human rights".
(Bu..., back in These days..., i think nobody cares ist....)

Was this under the "british law" or under "old indian"?

Did he get and fair, open judge/court?
Od did the government make the "descion"?

This was in 1965 and under old Indian law . I do not wish to comment upon the fairness of what happened , because the answer will involve politics . Perhaps a private message would help you ?

CLIENTS, PART II
Did you also have clints, witch comes for wild-life watching also, photograhic safari oder fishing "only"?
(No joke: I had read in old books, that there are also some clients, witch came from Great Britain to old India, "only" to catch butterflys. They collect them. By the way: You must have great species there.)

Oh , yes . We had many clients who would come , just for fishing or shooting birds or climbing hills. However , other guides were assigned to those duties. I preferred actual hunting , as it excited me more and the payment was higher.

What did you think / remember:
- How many (ca.) clients did you have over the years?
- How many (in %) came from USA, Europa, Russia and ....?

It is difficult to give an exact number. It must be remembered that Shikar season I India used to be seven months long and l was a professional Shikari for eight years . I would estimate roughly that at least a hundred clients and they came from all over the world. Mostly American , but many were European as well.

Thank you, Sir.

Did you remember your first client?
And your last one?

What did you think about the hunting ban?
Did you hope, it will be open again?
- In the old days (1970...)?
- Now (2020)?

I remember all my clients. I hated the hunting ban and l hoped it would be overturned .
Today , in places like Kuch Bihar and Uttar Pradesh , Nilgai and boar are hunted as they damage crops
