Ruger No.1

Would love to see a No. 1 chambered in 300WSM. Not sure if it's ever been done, maybe would compete with 300RCM. Otherwise, am waiting for 300 Win Mag.
I had one "built" w/ 26" stainless barrel, went 12.8' @ 1,000 yards for five, including the "called" flyer. 8.4" without. NEVER sell it.

6.5x57R
7x65R
8x75RS
9.3x74R(been done but not available anymore I think)
450/400 3"
450 No 2 NE

IvW,

I like yours and other member's caliber / cartridge suggestions.
Had not heard of the 8x75R until reading this thread.
But, it looks like it might be in the realm of the .300 H&H Flanged?
If so, then it is a good one for sure.

One of the fellow rifle nuts up here in the frozen north, bought a 2nd hand #1, in caliber .458 Winchester.
Then, he had it rechambered to .450 No2 NE.

I presume the ejector required a bit of hand work but, otherwise it was only a simple chamber reaming.
Of course it has the short-for-a-singleshot length barrel (24").
But at least it's now in a classic cartridge of old Africa and old India.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

The Greener GP in the Police Mark III version would be an ideal candidate for re-barreling to a standard 12-bore (most interestingly in the Paradox configuration, should one feel so inclined). They're common and inexpensive and already made up to accept a standard 12-bore head (the Mark III uses an odd shell with a 12-bore head but a 14-bore body, so made so as to prevent criminals from stealing and then making use of the weapon).

Those GP's are sadly not very common here in Alaska.
However, they do pop up on gunsinternational.com, as well as other web sites in the USA, now and then.
Perhaps I'll stumble into the right price on one some day.
Cheers.

I'd like to see the no1's in a bigger variety of the nitro express cartridges, in the process of getting my 458 lott rebarrelled to 577 ne and it gets a bit expensive

Agree, mate. Te classic look of the No 1 cries out for unusual calibers, an that's part of my sinful behavior.
I buy one now and then, and have it rebarrelled, but not always in the N E cartridges.
I look through books and start wondering: what next? So far they've been modern ones, the last one, just finished,
is in 9.3X64 Brenneke. I know of builds in 470 and 500 NE, and wildcats of all variations.
Anything over 500 NE means too much material has to be taken out of the block and action to stay safe.
I'd like to go with either the rimmed or rimless 7X64, but brass is near non-existent for the rimmed version,
and the 280 Rem is a virtual copy of the 7X64.
Ahhh, well, I'll keep thinkin' despite the headaches it gives me...
Cheers, mate

at one time I had 11 # 1,s and three # 3,s, but I down sized to four # 1,s and two # 3 ,s. a .223-26", a .300-26" wm, a 35 whelen-22" and a .460 S&-22" and two # 3,s, a .22-22" hornet and a 45-70-22". all sho0t fairly well with my reloads..

Geoff, I'd think that it would still be safe in lower pressure cartridges such as the 577 or 600 nitro?

I use to think was weir liking No 1s an No 3s. Not an more..
Mine run as follows: 17Fireball, 22-250. 300WSM. 9.3X64. 416 Rigby. Others I'm thinkin' about ...
Any suggestions, fellas? I may need one in the mid/high 20 calibers..

22Hornet
7x57
9.3x74
450/400NE
470 NE

I own the middle 3 but would like the other two to have a home in the safe.

It is nothing more than the 9,3x74R necked down to .323.
I´m shooting the so called "Goering - Patrone" ( because H. Goering, Reichsjägermeister" was a great follower
of this catridge) in a Merkel_drilling. Good cartridge for red stags, wild boar and plains game with 200 gr NP .

I think a real slim 9.3x74R would be great.
Also 375 Flanged.
I have one in 458win mag, I’ve considered boring it out to 458lott but haven’t bothered.

Also if they made one in a real cool caliber like 500NE or 577NE that would be awesome.
Maybe two models in 577NE - a traditional African style and a stainless variant with built in muzzle brake? Something for the wanna be elephant hunters and something for the T-Rex hunters that way

For those who don’t know, (for a right handed shooter) you can keep some rounds in your left hand between your fingers. After you shoot you open the lever, it ejects the spend case and you can pretty quickly slide in a new round. That’s the beauty of the No.1 compared to a break open single shot. It’s not that slow to reload actually.
Not great for a charging buff but getting off a follow up shot on a wounded animal before it gets out of range is not out of the question.

I’ve got my 458 loaded with 250gr-300gr hollow points for Australian game haha, it’s like a big varmint rifle.
Really fun gun to shoot the 24inch barrel feels short because you don’t have a bolt in between you and the start of the barrel.
With 500grainers you are glad you have a big heavy barrel too

I’ve got an old No 1 in .22 hornet. My boys learned to shoot with that rifle in Wyoming prairie dog towns.

I like the idea of a No 1 in .303, I’m thinking that River did a run of these?

Blued Lott or Nitro with 26" barrel. I already have a .375 and I am in love. The .458 has all the cheap cast bullets and the lower velocity to make use of them...
