This guy here....

I've heard that it is possible with the 50 BMG, but I always figured it was bull. I guess I was wrong....

I did it shooting ground squirrels once. Missed the squirrel by just a bit but hit the rock next to it. Pieces of the rock killed the squirrel. I hit the rock at about 300 yards with a 700gr AP bullet out of one of my 50 BMG rifles. :)

So much for my buddy thinking he had a big gun when he pulled out his 25-06 and light weight bullets. :)

Ok I’m typically not the guy to say this but, WTF???? What was the purpose in that other than just saying “I shot a deer with a 50BMG”??? I really don’t give a shit but at the end of the day I can’t see anything good coming from that on a PR front. Now, Keith has the right to do what ever in hell he wants and I’m not really passing judgement but I just don’t see the point. I guess it’s good that he missed because he’d have vaporized her if he had hit her.

I was also think why. I expect a front on chest shot would have decimated the whole body.

Ethical kill.....? I guess that's why we all see ethics in a different light.

Well, people in the States do some often questionable things, and put them on the web merely because they can. I think this was a fine example of that fact.

I shot at a fox and the Bullet didn’t even penetrate the skin. The fox dropped dead and my investigation revealed that the bullet simply grazed the skin of the chest.
I fired a 90 grain Speer in 253 with 44 grains of AR2209 (oz powder that emulated IMR 4350).

A long time Ago i shot at a kangaroo a mighty long way out. It dropped dead. Investigation revealed the shot grazed the right side of its face and did not penetrate. The cartridge was 270 with a 130 grain bullet.
A friend and I were goat hunting. He found s young goat dead and his shot missed. He used a 243.

Gizmo---"I am not really passing judgment" ????????????WTF Your post says different. The deer will not "vaporize" if hit with a 50BMG. You have been drinking too much of the anti-gun/hunting Kool-Aid if you believe that. I do not say you should not have an opinion(judgment) but at least be honest about it and not hide behind a smoke screen.

I understand you are one of the special members since you are an outfitter and I am just a member----- who has hunted for many years. I see you patting yourself on the back here all the time. Maybe some of it is deserved. But you do our sport no good when you start dividing us because you think something does not suit you. The antis love that and have been doing so to us for many years. We, as a collective group, still have not figured that out and often become our own worse enemy by not standing behind ALL hunting/firearm ownership. I can bet that some people will not like/agree with some of your hunting practices/choices also. But they do not need to put you down as long as your choices are legal where you hunt.

Interesting examples here. I hope you get some good hits once in a while! LMAO
Thanks to all for sharing. I anticipated a bunch of NOs, but as per normal the Community provides a surprise.

One could substitute “captive bred lion”, ultra long range game animal shooting, or any number of other ethical issues and written the same response. I think we all do our sport a disservice when we are quiet about what we perceive as unethical practices. I think using a .50 BMG on a deer is ridiculous and unethical. Note, no one said a thing about his right to own the bloody thing. And while I admit, I haven’t seen a deer shot with one, I have seen human beings that were hit by .50’s, and a shoulder strike on that doe would have been, let’s say, dramatic. Along with rejecting the “if it’s legal, shut up” argument, I also don’t see much good coming from attacking personally members on this site; one of the things that has separated this forum from others in which I no longer participate.

Not really necessary to the discussion is it?

+1

I think this video is better for the fact he missed. The miss made this interesting to me, who knows squat about heavy cartridges like this one. Otherwise, I don't get the morbid curiousity with hitting a doe in the head with a 50 BMG, regardless of this being a management hunt or not.

From my limited experience culling in the UK and South Africa .........I have grown to despise long range shooting ....the bullet time of flight and indeed opportunities for a followup are close to zero .....even at 200m an animal can move at 1000 m well you have to cover a km just to get to the blood trail .........

If you’d read what I said I’m pretty sure I specifically said he had the right to do whatever the hell he wanted to. I also don’t know where you get off with your smart ass “pat yourself on the back” comment. Im not hiding behind a smoke screen or any other thing as I was pretty crystal clear about what I said.
Additionally, if you were the apparent expert on my posts that you seem to be implying you’d know that I am a huge advocate for taking a united front. I have also stated more times than I can count that we must stand together whether we agree with a particular practice or not as long as it is legal.
I never said a damn thing about firearms Ownership.
And lastly your damned right it would have vaporized her if he’d hit a touch low in the neck. That would have split her into pieces. I happened to have had the opportunity to play with the 50 BMG a little and can guarantee, as RegLeg stated, it would have been quite dramatic.
The fact of the matter is pulling a stunt like this and filming it to post in addition to talking about how the velocity of the round sucked the eyes through her head does infinite more damage to us as a whole than me kissing Keith Warren’s ass because he’s a self proclaimed super hunter. I don’t give a damn if he wants to shoot deer with a tank but don’t post that crap and expect it to do anything but hurt our sport.
For the record I’ve had several conversations with Keith and have never been very impressed with the way he sees certain things but you know what, he has the right to his opinion. No I don’t “know” him or call him at home or anything like that but have been around him a little bit and it’s a result of crap like this as to why I have the opinion that I do.

I agree that uploading this on Youtube does nothing positive for our image in changing our image for the better with respect to the ignorant and prejudiced masses. Such a disproportional mismatch of calibre to game can only be detrimental on any social media platform. Though this guy can do as he pleases, methinks he should be mindful that everything to do with hunting in all social media is scrutinised, vilified and deliberately misconstrued by anti-hunting warriors for their own agenda. IMO I cannot see the point in using such a heavy calibre on a very lightly framed animal, as there's nothing to be learnt ballistically: except confirming a gaping hole and the carcass blown 10 feet away (even though in this instance he missed). Such an exercise would be more appropriate and beneficial for our mutual interest, had he'd used this calibre on a heat/lung shot with a rhino, hippo or elephant.

So, what is the topic here?

Reading the threads I think there's two topics emerging. Firstly, the issue of using a heavy calibre on light game, and secondly, posting it on social media. Though to be fair, this video did prove in this case a miss did kill the doe.

I'll have to witness the unedited video of the follow up to see the proof of the "kill". I think it was a YOUTUBE special effects job.
The deer looks like it "jumped the bullet". :)

Every once in awhile I like to push some buttons.
I did a good job.
Maybe even got some people to think and consider things they think/say.
I have seen photos of elk shot with a 50 and nothing real bad.
If you say(all of those responding) that we need to support each other then you have failed again.
I also think the video was doctored and even if not "I personally" would not post something like that on the internet. But he does have the right even if not in good taste.
Yes Gizmo I have read some of your posts and I have gotten the feeling you are pretty full of yourself. But that is just what I take from the posts. The truth may be different but I have to go by what I have read here before. I no longer read any threads you start just because. I wish you no bad. What you wrote was judgmental and yet you try to say you are not. I am at least honest in that I know I can be judgmental such as what I said about you. Be it right or wrong.
Have a great day and this will be my final post on this thread because I will not continue to extend the bickering. Besides I need to get ready to go hog hunting this evening.
This is a great site and to the mods I am sorry if I caused you any trouble with the posts.

I think we can all agree, Hornady DG ammo sucks....oh wait, wrong thread...
