Has anyone heard anything recently about a suspension on hunting permits for small cats such as cerval, civet, caracal and the such in the Limpopo province? I was told last week that PHASA had released a statement stating that there would be no more permits issued for the remainder of the year in the Limpopo province for these cats. Does anybody have any knowledge of this?

Crap I hope this isn't true!

I hunted the nocturnal species - all of those little cats - with Richard Lemmer of Safari Afrika last year in the Limpopo. He would know without a doubt.

Yikes! I sure hope not! I leave in just over a month and have made plans to hunt Serval and Caracal specifically. Although I believe permits have already been applied for...
However, if this just a very late April Fools joke, ya got me! :)

Who told you this? There is nothing on PHASA website

I'm going hunting for all of the small cats except caracal in less than 3 weeks. I have permits. If only I could get the permit for the leopard that is eating all the impala baits in the area. The leopard eats day and night.

Maybe just the ones being "raised" ? :D

I hope this is not the case. What else is next for Pete's sake !!??!!

So here is what I've heard, and it was via a quick whatsapp message, so not a lot of detail.

There is no suspension. There is a limitation on permits.
  • One per farm, per species
  • Two per outfitter license
So to my understanding and using Serval as an example, an outfitter could only hunt one Serval on his "main farm." He could then go down the road to another farm and hunt a second Serval. He could not then go further down the road and hunt a third Serval, under his license.

I don't know exactly what constitutes a farm, etc... I also don't know if this is brand new, or has been around a while.

@Royal27 that is great info. Thank you for taking the time to look into this and share your findings. Much appreciated! (y)

Gladly.

Just hope I got it all right. :)

Hopefully a Limpopo outfitter will jump in with more detail, if need be.

Does Pieter already have your permits Charlie? I would think he would?

If so, I don't think you will have an issue.

Mine is in Namibia right now with no service or I would be checking in with him.

E, I just wanted to let you know that they have found a new species in Limpopo; Long-tailed Serval.
Picture below!

I'm in @BRICKBURN. We should definitely try to get a permit for this varmint. :)

Yep spoke with him this morning! We will hunt the cats in Northwest Prov. And he has permits there.

They did impose this ban and proposed quota system on May 22, the proposed quota per region in Limpopo was as follows:
Brown Hyena 2
Spotted Hyena 2
Serval 3
Honey Badger 3
Civit 5
Caracal 5
African Wildcat 5
Waterberg (one of the regions) is two and a half times the size of Kruger National Park ... 11.2 Million Acres. LHLF and PHASA set up a meeting with LEDET on the 26 May to discuss this ban and quota and after submitting evidence and pointing out the lack of industry participation and consultation this ban was lifted for 2017. This thread might still be real for 2018 and we have a lot of hard work ahead of us to prevent this from happening. The agreement for 2017 is 2 per species per outfitter and 1 per species per property for 2017. Giving them two pictures - one with 3 Honey Badgers and the other with 2 Brown Hyenas on the same bait on the same night in the Waterberg region must have helped with the dicision making process!

Please remember - for any one who wants to hunt these species to give your outfitter at least 30 Days prefferably more in order for him to apply for these permits.

Happy Hunting
