Disaster strikes!

so here in Texas we have been in a drought for the last 7 or so years. We have been praying for rain. 4 years or so ago we built a lake that's roughly 30 acres. It filled up with one of the only decent rain we have had about to months after completion. Since that time we have had to drill three different wells to try and keep it at half capacity. Despite low water levels the fish thrived and we had bass pushing four lbs. large catfish, blue gill and crappie. Well this week the rains came. Unfortunately all at once. We have gotten about 10" in three days 5 1/2 inches. Came in 45 min. When the water rushed in and hit the dam it couldn't hold and blew out. We lost the entire lake and all the fish in it. I'm absolutely sick about the whole thing. We will pick ourselves up and rebuild bigger and better but wow what a kick in the nuts.

Wow so sorry that happened! Tough country you live in. Bummer all that time to grow those fish to such respectable size only to lose them so.

Thanks guys I'll try and post some before and after pics. I'm heart broken. A lot of time and money was gone in a flash. The funny thing is when we built it we hired a professional pond building company to build it. The guy who built went on and on about how he's never lost a dam. Never say never I guess.

Gizmo I'm glad you are going to pick yourself up and go again! Sounds like you are going to need a diversion slough to take pressure of the Dam when heavy rain comes. Best wishes as you rebuild.

Feel bad for you man. That really has to hurt.

The thunder systems that are starting over you are coming over us with about the same amounts of rain. As you mentioned, this part of the country has been suffering through drought. It's sad that when we finally get the rain we need, it comes so fast that it can't absorb down to the aquifer, and just runs off, or blows out dams.

So sorry to hear about the way that worked. Rain is a great thing in proper measures. My pond here by my house can raise 20 feet with a good rain. Glad no one was hurt or homes damaged, but it still bites.
