What are those white marks that old buffaloes get on their faces, especially under their eyes, when they get older?

Thank you.

The older the animals get the more hair they loose. A bit like us really.
The skin starts to show and gives them a whiteish appearance. This is one of the tell tale signs of an older animal. The ultimate trophy is a bald scrum cap bull ie no horns or hair!

Badges of Honor...

Even if the old bull doesn't have the genetics to make a good boss...

Those marks are some of what we are looking for in older buff. Real sign of character and respect. No 2 bulls are exactly the same.

I think that's basically textbook old, with good bosses, right there.

Out of curiosity, was he with a group or out on his own?

Thank you for the question. He was in a group of five duggaboys. I shot the one on the right first and then the one on the left which is the one I posted earlier. This picture is after they were hosed off and their faces appear darker. Here is the other one just after the shot:

But the craziest thing to happen is the face swelling this bull experienced after death. Here is a pic I snapped upon our return to load the bulls. I'm not sure what caused this except for maybe blood pooling.

And a nice roman nose to finish it off...

Very nice. I had assumed he was either on his own or off in a group of big mature duggaboys. The more and more I read/see, seems like Zim is one of, if not the, place to be for big cape buffalo.

Really enjoying this thread, thanks for showing everyone.

This old guy had one ear shredded, the other mostly missing, molars worn mostly flush with a couple well below the gum line, super heavy broken up and worn down headgear, but really not that much hair loss. He was huge, like sinus cavity markedly bigger and eye sockets a good 1.5-2” wider than my other bull from the trip and all others in the salt. Huge, old, but hairy as heck still.

Hello! I saw your post from last year about a missing crate from your hunt in Moz. I am curious how that all turned out? We (my fiancé and I) also hunted in Moz in 2024 and the trophies are being shipped with Hunters Services Limitada. We have some concerns on whether we will get the trophies home or not. May I ask who you hunted with?
