Oh, this absolutely reeks of lefty swamp tactics to further hurt gun owners and hunters.

I've read some books on the bush war such as Fire Force but have never actually found anyone that had served especially in the RLI. Would you mind sharing more of your experiences?
In 2014 in Mozambique one of the chefs in camp was a former RLI veteran and he told some fascinating stories that were both interesting and sad.

I smell a conspiracy, wasn’t there a fire at the Woodleigh plant in Australia? Not really but it will be good to hear what happened.

While old guys with zero experience with a an all volunteer force pine away for a military draft (usually in the belief it will solve social or cultural issues - zero to do with military capability), I know of no single person who experienced both - I am one - who wants to turn away from a professional army and return to the draft.

100% spot on.

After 35+ years of either serving directly, or working in support via the defense industry.. and getting to know literally thousands of leaders across all branches of service.. never once have I heard a senior leader say that he/she thinks returning to the draft is a good idea (for a wide variety of reasons)..

Quite a bit for the start of the mud season. Last night the Ukrainians struck two airfields in the far eastern part of Luhansk that were used by Russian helicopter aviation assets including some of their progressively scarce modern KA 52 attack aircraft. The Russian Telegram channels are exploding over the scale of damage. There is very clear evidence that US ATACMS missiles were used for the attack for which an aviation target set like this are ideal for the M74 CBU type submunition. This is the first time we have provided such an asset without a lot of fanfare.

ATACMS enables Ukraine to strike anything anywhere in any occupied area to include all of Crimea.

This may be behind a paywall.

The encirclement of Bakhmut continues to make slow but steady progress which also seems to have the Telegram channels clutching their collective pearls.

In the area of the attempted offensive by Russian forces near Avdiivka, the Russians are taking enormous losses in materiel and personnel.

In the South, the attempt to break through the Russian defensive belts and seize Tomak continues at a very slow pace.
Thank you RL

I could enumerate the various things I learned as a result of being in the US military- but I find it's like most other things, I don't expect the effort to change anyone's opinion and it just isn't worth my time and effort.

With regard to news coverage, I do tire of one story, be it the Ukraine war or the most recent events in Israel- entire news hours are devoted to coverage at the expense of other important events. If all that is going to be covered is some event and then hours of talking head opinion on what could happen next and the possible results of what could happen after that- I'll turn it off and read a book.

For recruiting, they aren't targeting the young men who would want to be in the military, who would thrive in a real military. They are targeting the youth in general. You do not want the youth in general. In turn, and this is just my opinion, in doing this they are making the military much less appealing to the people you might actually want there.

I periodically get the itch to return, but then I look at mandated stuff like covid related shenanigans, and I realize it is not the culture in which I would do well. I just miss blackhawks and burning through Sam's ammo.

I figure the coming recession will help the recruiting shortfalls.

in this talk about volunteer or draft military, I'll just say that about 10-20% of the chalk & chain ground-pounders I knew (Navy) had a similar story. They went into the military at the behest of a judge when they didn't like the other option offered involving a jumpsuit. Circa 1995-97. West coast. Some of them just wanted a job or to escape BFE where they were.

I'll also say once you get through the base layers and into any of the specialized or SF community, you meet some fantastic folks that would find a way to win and excel in any situation.

Back on the draft thing - I liked the starship troopers concept. Citizenship should be EARNED!!! one of those ways is through military service.

95-97 into the military rather than jail? That is absolute bullshit. Allow me to be even more bunt. That is a lie - at least with respect to the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. Perhaps you had another service in mind?

Don't know about those years, but I was in USMC recruit training in early '67 and I recall the Drill Instructor asking who had joined voluntarily and who was drafted. Everyone had volunteered and no one was drafted. there were a couple who said they had gotten in trouble with the law (nothing major) and were given the choice of prosecution or USMC and they claimed to have chosen USMC- however, as @Red Leg has said, no supportive evidence was given and likely it was just a story to promote a badass image.

Not sure if you're saying their story was a lie or me stating that's what I heard was a lie.

Maybe try reading again tuff guy and clarify.
I know it's hard.
10-20% is 1 outta 10 up to 2 outta 10.
1995-97 was a date range.
Navy was clearly stated.
Posting under the influence?

I bet there was some of that too.
never asked.

With some guys (and girls) you didn't put the quarter in because the song never stopped.

No. I understood that nonsense the first time. I served then, and In 97 at a fairly senior level. That simply did not happen. The last year that sort of nonsense occurred was 72. Those are facts.

Oh boy... one of those guys.

So your say so is gospel on all enlisted navy and usmc almost 30 years back over my passing on what others told me in person in 5 years , multiple ships, 2 squadrons, 2 deployments, and multiple inter-branch schools.

Right.

I realize how hard the bug has bit. I’m on the cusp of safari #2 and I’m looking to plan #3 with my 11 year old a year from now while looking at my work schedule for overtime and computing the math of how many shifts are needed….

I'd like to get some too.

My wife (a biologist, like me) had to have a melanoma removed from her arm last fall.

Hallo Marius- do you have possibilities for stags in September during the roar? Where are your hunting areas in Romania?

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on another rifle but would love to see your rifle first, any way you could forward a pic or two?
