Which South African animals to target

As far as I am aware, will certainly apologize if I'm wrong.
Very sad as that would boost the population and more land owners to make space for them keeping them seperate from breeding with Blesbuck.

I think I spoke too soon, had heard from others of hunting them a number of years ago and being problematical. Looked at some US Fish and Wildlife articles after you questioned this, looks like some extra steps to importing to the US? Someone with more experience will hopefully answer.

I am leaving next week on my first African hunt in South Africa. Watching the news and seeing what is going on this may be my last trip to South Africa before I go to other more stable countries. That is based on conditions in SA continuing to deteriorate. That being said, what should be my target animals that are readily available in SA but not so common in other countries.

Thanks in advance.
Don't watch the news and hunt everything you can. You will be back!

We are going to East Cape but also spending 4 days in Cape Town after the hunt. My honeymoon so we are going to be tourist.
How much time hunting? If you had the time and inclination, driving the Garden Route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town is fantastic:)

Black WIldebeast for sure! I believe they are only native to parts of South Africa though thay have been introduced in other areas. Kudu, Waterbuck, Red Hartebeast, Springbok and Imapla would be good choices also.

If you seriously think you might only hunt SA once. Best target a good Nyala and / or Vaal Rhebok. Most of the other species can be picked up in other countries, and quite often equal or better quality trophies.

I’m in camp in the Eastern Cape as we speak (Lesser Karoo) and I can promise you that my wife and I feel as safe as we have anywhere. We had a day off hunting today and visited the Addo elephant reserve and the Deep Sea Angling Club & Splitting Image taxidermy in Port Elizabeth. We also felt perfectly safe in both of those locations, and on the drive to/from, as well.

If it is a first time SA hunt, I would take the following: Kudu, Gemsbok, Impala, Wart Hog and Zebra.

Cape Kudu, Cape bushbuck, oribi, cape grysbok, Vaal Rehbok, Impala.

B List warthog, Cape eland, blesbuck, black wildebeest

C list what ever strikes you when africa puts it in front of you.

Night hunts Spotted Genet, porcupine, Caracal

The odds of getting a permit on the Oribi, and grysbok are slim on short notice, but it never hurts to ask.

New user here. Going on my second trip to Africa. First trip used outfitter 375H&H for everything. This trip is a cull hunt for Warthog, Impala, Wildebeest, Zebra and similar. I really want to take my own gun. 6.5 PRC. Ballistics are equal to or better than .308 using 156 grain Berger Elites. I’ve spent hours trying to figure out if that’s enough gun. It shoots less tha one moa out to 500 yards. However, I’ve read an awful lot of articles that say it’s not enough gun. Any thoughts on it? Thanks

I see nothing wrong with the gun for a cull hunt, but I don’t think Berger bullets have any place in African hunting, except maybe long range shooting. Bullets designed to retain mass and get deep penetration give predictable results. The weight doesn’t make up for the bullet design.

Kudu, springbuck, impala, waterbuck, and gemsbuck. Warthog are a bit of hassle to import skulls. I would pass on baboon for same reason but property owner may want them shot anyway. Springbuck and impala are very numerous and cheap trophy fees.

Cape kudu and bushbuck would be my top two animals to hunt for. If you were a South African resident and watched the news about any major US city, you’d have second thoughts about visiting the US. I’ve never had any issues in my trips to Africa, and one trip I spent a week as a tourist between Cape Town and Gaansbai.

The North American Eastern Grey Squirrel!!!
It does not belong there, some idgit thought it was a great idea to introduce tree rats to the Cape Town area.

"The eastern grey squirrel was introduced into South Africa in the late 1890sby Cecil John Rhodes. He released squirrels on his Groote Schuur estate in Cape Town around the turn of the 19th century. While their range initially spread to Swellendam by the 1970s, their distribution is now mainly limited to the South West Cape, often associated with oak and pine trees"
