Each South African province offers something unique, in terms of topography, habitat and species. A number of species have been introduced to provinces where they do not naturally occur which means that most provinces now offer a large number of species.
I operate in the Northwest and Limpopo provinces thus I can only speak on these two.

In my opinion the Limpopo is still the mecca of hunting in South Africa. The Limpopo is bordered by Botswana and Zimbabwe in the North and the 2000000 hectare Kruger park forms the eastern border with Mozambique. The Northwest province forms the western border.
Limpopo is arguably the province with the best big 5 hunting in the country, especially in the areas round Kruger where all of the big 5 as well as hippo and crocodile can be hunted.
Northwest is the lion hunting province of South Africa, I would guess that about 90 percent of lion hunts are done here. The eastern parts of the Northwest are very similar to Limpopo in being a bushveldt area with thick cover. To the west you move into the Kalahari region. The south offers open plains similar to the free state.
The huntable species in these provinces are as follows(I am sure there are more which other outfitters are welcome to add to the list):
Aardwolf
African civet
Black wildebeest
Blesbuck
Bushpig
Caracal
Grey duiker
Cape Eland
Livingstone eland
Gemsbuck
Giraffe
Brown hyena
Spotted hyena
Klipspringer
Lechwe
Vervet monkey
Porcupine
Common reedbuck
Rock hyrax
Serval
Springbuck
Tsessebe
Waterbuck
Burchell zebra
Hartmann zebra
African wildcat
Baboon
Black backed jackal
Blue wildebeest
Limpopo bushbuck
Cape fox
Red duiker
Fallow deer
Genet

Kudu
Lichtenstein hartebeest
Nyala
Ostrich
Red hartebeest
Mountain rhebuck
Roan
Sable
Steenbuck
Warthog
Scimitar
Buffalo
Elephant
Leopard
Lion
Hippo
Crocodile

Quite a number of these species are not normally found on pricelists or in packages, but it is interesting to see what is available. I would like to have other outfitters from these and other provinces to add or show what the different provinces offer.
I am sure we are all going to be surprised at what you can find where.

The good old Eastern Cape comes in at the second most hunted destination in SA behind Limpopo. I am sure it has a lot to do with the availabillity of species in Limpopo like Elephant,Leopard,Hippo,Lion and Crocs that puts it in first place.

Other species you may find in the EC and not in Limpopo.
Cape Grysbuck
Blue Duiker
Oribi
Vaal Rhebuck
Bontebok

Most of the other species listed above are also available in the EC, but some like Spotted Hyena,Sharps Greysbuck and Red Duiker are not.

In my opinion the Limpopo is still the mecca of hunting in South Africa.

Peter thanks for stating this topic, I have wondered the same.
The Limpopo Province is in fact as you say THE HUNTING MECCA OF SOUTH AFRICA.
Although all the species I list here are not native to Limpopo and some are ridiculously expensive, one can still hunt them, some of the native species, in some cases need additional permits also making them difficult to hunt.
But as far as I think it would be difficult to beat 64 species in one province and all within 2 or 3 hours drive at the most.

Thanks Tokkie

You have much more experience about the EC.
Would it be possible for you tho list the Hunt able species for the EC.
Excluding the exotics like Arabian Oryx, Himalayan Thar, Pere Davids Deer, Bison, Water Buffalo, Red Stag, Axis Deer, Hog Deer, Mouflon, Indian Black Buck and all those Please. Fellow Deer and Wild Boar is all over the show so that can count.

Some of those are found in the Northwest, but I agree that's a bit to exotic, thus I did not add them.

Would be interesting to see what the price differance would be on avarage for species on Limpopo and the Eastern Cape:) Some species command a pretty premuim in Limpopo, others again in the Eastern Cape.

Bossie, EC has some 60" Kudu, but man the price:mad: You are right though expect a 46-48" avarage for EC Kudu, but they cost half the price:D

You are right Tokkie but I won't go into price that much, simple reason, I would not be looking for a 60" Kudu in the EC just because of the price. Too much of a

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
