This video will shed some light on what's changed in the gun making tradition.

The lock maker in particular shows what he once received in the way of a tumbler (what arrived at his bench, the rough forging), and what is handed down from the machine shop nowadays. It saves a lot of expensive bench time, but is just as good (provided the one at the bench is every bit as good).

Just an FYI. The Searcy at Buda, TX cabelas for $7000 is not a BSS / Win23 / Miroku based gun. You can always identify the Miroku boxlocks because they back of the receiver has a wedge almost like a dovetail where the metal meets the wood. Another give away that the receiver is indeed a ground up double rifle receiver is that it has the bolsters under the water table where the barrels meet the receiver. No modern shotgun has this feature, only double rifles. (exception: 100 year old live pigeon guns occasionally did)

Not saying anyone should buy the gun, just clarifying that it is indeed a legit double rifle, not a browning 20 gauge made in Japan with double rifle barrels slapped on it.
