It is very difficult to compare, because there are several different self defense standards in the United States, but I don't think many Americans really understand the Canadian law on self-defense. To be fair lots of Canadians don't either.Not really, I don't think. The laws in these countries have been written to make any use of force by civilians a crime. Any competent prosecutor would get a guilty finding from any average jury. Things may not be as bad as it.looks to me as a US citizen, but I have read enough about guilty findings in the UK to believe that it is.
There is no duty to retreat in Canada, and as long as the force used to respond to the threat is reasonable and proportionate, you are good to go.
