There are a lot of threads on what set up to take to South Africa for plains game, so I thought I'd post how my equipment performed after the fact. Couldn't have been more pleased. PH said it was perfect.

This is by no means saying that this set up is right for everyone, just how it worked for me.

Equipment:

Bow - Mathews Halon 6 29.5" draw set at 66 lbs

Arrow - Easton 6mm FMJ

Broadhead - Muzzy MX - 3

Total arrow weight 475 grains

Performance results:

Kudu at 22 yards: pass thru, ran 40 and collapsed

Blue wildebeest at 27 yards: pass thru, ran 40-45

Waterbuck at 32 yards: pass thru, ran 50-60

Warthog at 18 yards: pass thru, ran 30

Impala at 30 yards: broke opposite leg, no pass thru, ran 20

Blesbok at 18 yards: broke both front legs, no pass thru, ran 30

Looks like you had great shot placement sir. Thanks for sharing with us.

Good stuff, really interesting to see

Who were you hunting with?

That is pretty close to the setup I plan on using. Glad to see it worked well on all the animals.

Certainly a good setup. Good weight arrow and bow lbs with a long draw as well. You can kill any plains game with ease. But the reasonable yardage and great arrow placement alone assured ur success. Nothing like the stick and string. Well done and congrats!

Nice photo dab as well

Congrats on your trip!

Dittos on the great trophies and consistently good shot placement. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the fact that all animals were taken at what I consider reasonable bow hunting distances. Congratulations on your hunt and thanks for sharing.

Proper shooting sir! Thank you!

Congrats with a good hunt. Did you walk and stalk or hunt from a blind ?

Ty
Congratulations. Cherish your memories...

Hallo Marius- do you have possibilities for stags in September during the roar? Where are your hunting areas in Romania?

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on another rifle but would love to see your rifle first, any way you could forward a pic or two?
Thanks,

Love your rifle! I'm needing a heavier rifle for Africa. Sold my .375 Dakota Safari several trips ago. Would you have any interest in a trade of some sort involving the custom 338/06 I have listed here on the site ( I have some room on my asking price. I also have a large quantity of the reloading components and new Redding dies as well as a box of A-Square Dead Tough ammo.
