Hi, I am looking to put together a father/son safari for 2017/18 and am here to learn more about extending my hunting experience. Ideally we would like a plains trophy each, along with some management hunting and some wing shooting for a couple of days. We both immerse ourselves in the local hunting and wildlife as often as we can, and to finally get to sub-Saharan Africa after years I spent working in North African cities would be fantastic.

As traditionalists I shoot a 1943 .303 No.4 1* with 180gr. Sierra SP Spitzes, my son shoots a Mosin-Nagant carbine in 7.62x54R with irons and the same .311 bullet. The .303 has served three generations (and the odd Red Deer) proud, but I am thinking that a .300 Win Mag may soon join the stable. A good friend has shown me the amazing point and shootability of this calibre lately.

Any tips or advice are very welcome, just a quick look at the anatomy of plains game compared to European deer and a new continent is going to mean starting from scratch.

Thanks for the tips already gleaned.

Welcome to a great community Bongo! You're in the right place. Researching is the best part other than going. Read the trip reports and chat with other members. That 300 Win Mag will be all you need for a PG safari. All the best in the planning.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
