Hi Everyone,
I have been reading a lot on here for the last year, and figured it was about time I joined. Lots of good info and experience shared on thus forum. Currently planning a plains game hunt in South Africa for next summer. My last time hunting in Africa was 20 years ago, but the kids are older now, so it’s time to go back.

:S Welcome:

Good day! Welcome to AH! Enjoy the planning and all the excitement going with it!

welcome welcome welcome

Thanks everyone! Appreciate it.
Looking forward to plains game hunting next year! However, reading this forum as me pondering a cape buffalo hunt in the near future (maybe a cow or a cull hunt, as I do have a kid in college I still need to pay for ).
Thus, I am pondering the 9.3x62 vs the 375 H&H. I know both a proven, and the 375 H&H seems to be the go-to standard, but I really like the idea of a 9.3x62 with 286gr or 300gr bullets. I hunt with a 30-06, so many, many years of muscle memory for a standard length action. Plus, I think I would practice more with a 9.3x62. Hmmmm......

Welcome to AH! Lots of great people here!

Steve-O,

Welcome to AH. Which province in RSA are you looking to hunt? Buffalo was a hard animal to put down when I hunted them this summer. I used a 375HH and practiced with it extensively for two years prior to the buffalo hunt taking deer, wildebeest, and other animals with it first. Used the Barnes TSX 300g ammo for mine. If I have any advice it is to buy lots of ammo and practice with it off sticks a lot and also practice off sticks using a 22lr to build muscle memory.

Thanks JG26Irish_2

I will be hunting plains game in the Eastern Cape next year. I also plan on talking with the PH about possible Cape Buffalo hunting sometime in maybe another year or two.
Yes, I totally agree about practicing off shooting sticks. I picked up a set of 4 Stabil Sticks earlier this year and have been using them. I find them quite a bit more stable that the tri-pod style rest.
Still pondering 9.3x62 vs 375.

Welcome. What part of the state are you from?

Get a .375 H&H. Gold standard, do everything, and DG minimum. No brainer really. Recoil is manageable and you will get used to it….

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
