I finally bought my first rifle. After many posts asking for information and thoughts of members, i did what i normally do. Just go in the opposite direction.

However this direction was motivated by the birth of my son which changed the dynamics of my hunts in the future.

Let me explain. As per my other threads i was leaning towards 30 06 or 375 calibers. I know and love the 30cal and use them every year for hunting. But as stated my son was born a month ago and got me thinking that a 30cal is a bit on the big side for when he is 4 - 7years old to start learning to shoot. And obviously i don't know if the finances will allow for another rifle when he reaches that Age for him to learn.

If there is one thing i learned in my years here on AH its that 35Whelen Bob DOES NOT APPROVE a 243. Which leaves me with the 6.5 for a practical rifle which i can still hunt confidently with as well as something that a youngster cal learn to shoot.

If finances allow in the future i will then aquire my 30cal. But until then the 6.5cm will do. The dealer gave me a good price on this REMINGTON 700. Now it's just the wait!!! (yes in South Africa you wait for ever for a firearm license before you can take possession of your rifle)

Feel free to drop your opinion on bullrt choices as well as love / hate for the litte 6.5 who could.

I hope you enjoy that rifle for many years to come!

We all have different paths we follow, and motivations that propel us forward. Your reasoning makes perfect sense to me. Good for you. I look forward to seeing success photos in the future with your new purchase. And good on you for being forward thinking where your son is concerned.

While I very much lean towards .30 (308 win), because of longer barrel life, ammo availability and price, and finding recoil not worth mentioning in 308, I beleive you made good choice. Congrats on purchase and newborn hunter!

I'm not sure which one Bob dislikes more the 243 or the 6.5cm (you have read Bob call it the 6.5 man bun).

Either way it is an accurate cartridge, it will handle deer size game no questions asked.

Congratulations on the birth of your son, hope he and Mom are doing well.

That rifle can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Congratulations! My son is now 14 months old. I know the joy and pain you are going through.

Unfortunately old Townsend doesn't much like the 6.5 Manbun either.

As far as a kid learning to shoot that is still quite a big rifle. I'll be teaching my son on a .22 first that is appropriate for his size and suppressed so he can enjoy it ànd not be startled by the recoil or have hearing issues due to displaced earmuffs. From there it will be a 300 BLK with subsonic ammo tailored for whatever we're doing.

That rifle will effectively take all small and medium sized game you point it at if you do your part… I think you’ll get years of wonderful service from it.

Enjoy!

Great choice for a first rifle. I hope it's a tack driver.

Congrats on both your son and a great caliber. My Ruger 77 likes Hornady 143gr ELD-X ahead of 37.5gr of 4064. May you both have many good years hunting together.

Congratulations on your new purchase. An excellent chambering for game up to ~500# and capable of more. Light recoil. A great versatile round. Enjoy.

Enjoy your gun and good hunting!

Congratulations on your son, your family's new rifle, and (especially) on the fact that you put so much thought into buying your son a rifle--you're obviously a very caring dad. Caliber choice is very personal, so don't let anyone tell you you chose less then well!

+1. Go forth and hunt!

Good choice. It is the same caliber I bought for my son. It worked for a variety of PG, up to zebra. And I’ve used the 6.5 to take an elk. It will work fine with reasonable shot distances.

What is it they say?
Beware of the man who owns one gun he may know it well.
Congratulations all around, and so long as you can get the right ammo it you can hunt PG and feed your family.
I've been vocal about the CM myself but mostly because of the nonsense claims and unrealistic expectations of many.
Your decision was considered and practical.
Our Aussie humour is often misunderstood but we are all different.
Bob will understand, it's close to a .25 so you can buy a .35 when the time comes.

Life is way too serious not to have a laugh!!

First things first: please accept congratulations for a newborn son.
I like Your rifle and caliber choice and the reason behind the choice.
I personally agree with .243 statement - don't know why but I always imagine that cartridge lying next to the lipstick .... and even the lipstick looks more dangerous than winchester  On the other hand a friend of mine hunts wild boars and red deers with it. But the perfect shot placement is necessary.
After many posts asking for information and thoughts of members, i did what i normally do. Just go in the opposite direction.
Regarding Your way of thinking, please allow me to add:
- Do not even think letting Your little boy start with .22lr! This would be just nonsense. o_O
- I strongly suggest: ignore earmufs and suppressors! - these things are for sissies.
- A friend of mine hunts with Sako Deerhead in 6.5 CM, but the animals make like ten to twenty paces after being shot, so it seems pretty much useless.:sneaky:

Hope that these advice will be helpful when put this (Your) way ;):LOL::LOL:
