More thoughts on 9.3x64

the x 64 will do anything the x62 and the whelen will do and then some.
if you have a x 64 and want to try the other two, just load the x 64 back and/or use lighter bullets.
how versatile is that?
bruce.
@bruce moulds
Not good enough mate
Just get a Whelen and found a hunting.
No fuss no bother, easy to get brass and projectiles.
Aim, pull trigger and game goes flop.
How simple is that.

Here’s my 9.3x64 Brenneke. It was made for Brenneke by ESHA in Germany about 100 years ago. It went to Africa, then England. Plenty of charm and small stock dings, but the bohler Antonit barrel is still exceptional. Love the plum brown barrel and the shoulders on the stock.

it has a side safety for stalking and an intercepting safety on the bolt shroud. just was putting a bit of fresh stock oil on it as it was hot and dry last week.

@ rookhawk
Only one word needed.
Exquisite.

I disagree with Arthur S. about the "uselessness of this caliber in Europe". Of course, there are people who get a moose in the spine on the run (I sometimes hunt with this guy). But it is better when there is a large caliber that corrects the flaws of aiming. A couple of times I participated in the procedure of searching for a wounded moose . Once he went for 2 km through snow-covered swamps, and then only fell (a guy from our team hit him in the liver). When we pulled out the carcass, I fell through the ice up to my chest a couple of times - and this is a small pleasure. But okay-elk, but there is also a large boar, and it does not always run from the hunter. 9, 3x62? But this is the same cartridge case as the 30-06, the same volume of gunpowder, the same energy.
9, 3x64-unique cartridge. Powerful, with reliable recharge. It has already been written that this cartridge is used by the Russian military. But it was repeated in Russia as hunting, in fact - invented a second time. We had a designer Blum, who made hunting cartridges based on common military cartridges in the 50s, in particular 220 Russian, and even a prototype of Grendel. But he considered it necessary to have a powerful 9 mm cartridge for our conditions, and re-designed the Brennecke cartridge.Original Design documentation was not available, and Blum developed the cartridge anew, with only sample measurements. Then the concept of copyright did not interfere with the dissemination of information :) . And when the military was looking in 90-th for a suitable cartridge for their purposes, they hardly even heard the name Brenneke, but the hunting cartridge seemed appropriate to them. This speaks primarily about the reliability of the design, otherwise it would not have passed military tests. As a former militaryman, I would hate to see these cartridges used in combat. But hunting is different.

There is only one problem: 9.3 is a European caliber, and the goods for reloading are produced mainly by American companies. For them, the 9.3 mm caliber is Cinderella. Finding a bullet or calibrator in this caliber is either difficult or expensive. This also applies to our "smaller brothers" who use 9, 3x62 and 9, 3x74r.
And we have added a shortage of shell casings. True, in our country you can find domestic casings, both brass and steel, but they are under the Berdan primer, and removing such caps is not easy.

That is a beautiful rifle rookhawk , great that you know some of its history .
I also have a 9,3x64 , it is an original Wilhelm Brenneke made in the Brenneke factory . From my research it has a FN Mauser action and a Bohler barrel . It appears to have been well used but is in good solid original condition . ( If anyone has any more information / opinions re this rifle please share ) I have not yet hunted with it or done any load development with it as yet .
When I bought it the previous owner had done a bit of load development and had decided on a 250 gr Barnes TSX bullet behind 62 gr of S341 ( South African powder ) which seems to have a lot of potential - I have only shot it at 50m and it grouped well . ( Target attached)
The rifle is a pleasure to shoot and I cant wait to get it into the bush to go hunting with it . The plan was to use it this year on one of my annual hunts but COVID laid waste to that plan , hopefully next year I will get a chance to use it .
Attached are some photos of it , apologies for not being the best photos but I hope good enough .

Hi Paul,

Nice rifle! A friend of mine down here have an almost identical W. Brenneke FN action rifle. He has not used for hunting, yet.
The target is impressive!
I have a question: how many rounds can be loaded in the magazine? I have the same question for rookhawk and his rifle.

Thank you!

CF

:giggle:Hey my man, I have shot a couple of buffalo and some Eland with a 9.3x64 and more with a 9.3x62 with warm handloads, all good,,,,,just prefer the 375 Ruger or H&H...Ive been the MM route and like them all but its a hassle as far as Im concerned..but my Africa days are about fullfield by my age so I'll make do on elk with my 338 and 375 Ruger...The others just aren't in the cards. The caliber game playing is old hat also...

Oh, Mr. Atkinson! When I bought a 9. 3x64 carbine, which was in 2001, I immediately started scanning the Web for information about this rare caliber. And the most informative was Your post on some resource, I even bought a set of RCBS #58290, it is now on my Desk. True, I had to add a small lathe to it to remove the belt, but that's another story... I didn't know as much about it then as the guy from Oklahoma you were talking to. For some reason, there are few practitioners in the Network who love this caliber, As they say, "not" the world is small", but "humus is thin"".
By the way, we have an unexpected source of 9.3 mm bullets, mostly FMJ. We have transferred to the category of hunting weapons rifles for subsonic cartridges 9, 3x39 (Kalashnikov cartridge case, heavy bullet 18 g). Once this weapon (the Vintorez rifle) was terribly secret. Now the cartridge case+bullet costs less than $ 1 at a decent quality. For training, this is better than lead or Makarov bullets.
