Here is a survey conducted by Dr. Paula A. White, Director of Zambia Lion Project, see more info at http://www.environment.ucla.edu/ctr/staff/White_Paula.html. She reached out by email to the African Professional Hunters Association (APHA) at https://www.africanpha.com.

PHs from all of the lion hunting countries are being encouraged to participate. The overall results will be made into a summary and provided as age guidelines, probably in a booklet form. Last day to participate: Dec 31, 2015

Here is her email…

Dear …,

Greetings! I hope this finds you well.

I am a lion researcher who has worked extensively in Zambia and with PHAZ, on age-based trophy selection and sustainable hunting. Many of the PHs in Zambia and other countries will know me already and be familiar with my research.

Recently, I have been contacting PH associations regarding a "lion age training" test that is part of a larger study of lion hunting being conducted by Panthera. They have gathered a large number of photographs of known-aged lions from different regions, showing variation and identifying some general characteristics that relate to age.

I am involved with this study, and have been asking of PH associations if they would please circulate the information and request their members to consider participating.

The first part of this training is an on-line test in which PHs estimate the age of lions in photographs. They then are given some guidelines before being shown a second batch of photos and tested again. Immediately after the test is finished, the PH receives their score to see how well they did.

The test is entirely anonymous. PHs from all of the lion hunting countries are being encouraged to participate. The overall results will be made into a summary and provided as age guidelines, probably in a booklet form.

The test is short -- it takes about 15-30 minutes, and can be found at the link below.

In my own work, I have now developed some quantifiable methods by which age of lion trophies can be more accurately assessed.

So, we are making some real progress now, on all fronts - pre-hunt selection and post-hunt age determination.

A brief description of the test written by Panthera (in bold) and the on-line link is given below:

Lion Aging Survey
Measure your 'lion aging accuracy score' and help improve lion hunting regulations

--Estimate the age of wild lions in photos
--Receive training on how to age lions
--See your 'lion aging accuracy score' before and after training
--Only 15-30 minutes to complete

Panthera is conducting a survey on aging lions. The goal is to determine which characteristics are most useful for accurately age lions, and gauge how much training can improve accuracy. Results will help develop training materials on aging and refine age-based hunting regulations. For more information, contact Jennie Miller at jmiller@panthera.org.

I would very much appreciate if you would circulate this e-mail to the membership.
I am always available to answer any questions or concerns on lions/hunting, etc, that anyone may have and I hope they will not hesitate to contact me directly. I will also be attending DSC and SCI in 2016 for the IPHA booth.

Thank you all very much for your help!
Kind regards,
Paula

Hi all,
I made the survey, it is very interesting and helpful.
I encourage everyone to do it, even hunters are welcome.
It is probably going to help lion hunting for a few more years.
PLEASE DO IT.

Christophe

Very worthwhile training process for me.

Since I have never hunted Lion , nor have I studied the proper way to judge Lions, I wanted to see just how well I would do.

It was amazing to see how difficult it really is to determine age from a photo.

"Before training" I got a 65% correct selection of the four age categories.
Within this I botched 4 Trophy vs Non trophy Photos. (my descriptions)
That is 7+ years vs the next lower age group.
I erred on the shooting side of the decision.

"After training" I got 78% correct selections in the four age categories.
I reduced the botched 2 Trophy vs Non Trophy Photos and erred on 2 to the younger side.

It appears knowledge and training can work.

I hope a bunch of experienced PH's can take the time to share their knowledge in this survey.

Were you top of the class Christophe?? :D

I took the survey today - it is done well and a good tool.
Looking forward to seeing more information on this.

well... the survey is good in regards to lion aging and information.
However, it did indicate that I am untrainable as my score remained the same after the online training.
I started with a respectable baseline score; never the less my failure to improve scientifically supports my girlfriend's theory that I am indeed untrainable!

Tell her to get an E-Collar. They work miracles in the right hands. :)

On a serious note - this is good for conservation and hunting.
Please pass it on to the professional hunters you know and hunt with.
I spoke to Jennie Miller today and they are looking for as much participation from Professional Hunters as possible.
Jennie and Paula are clued up on Lion's, Habitat, research and conservation and they need good information and input from the hunting community.
We are all working for the same goal; more habitat = more lions.

It is obvious that I have a ways to go to become a lion PH.:D

First time got a 48% All mistakes were underestimating the age. Was only off by one category.

Improved to 53 %. Was still underestimating the age. Once by two categories. The Paula White's/ John Jackson's/Government wildlife departments will like me. Not so much the clients. (n)

Way to long since school. I too am not teachable. Also taking the 15-30 minute test in 5 minutes probably didn't help.

Neat test. Thanks for making it available. It is certainly educational.

That was pretty cool...

I went from 56% to 65% after looking at many of my mistakes after the training I think I tried to outsmart myself, which isn't hard for me to do!

I just found out that I am hopelessly inept at aging lions. Just under 50% .

62,5% on the first try, same score after training :E Confused:

Made the same mistakes, I think they are younger than they really are.

Good side to err on.

Well 58% both before and after trainng. I did well with young and very old but not I between!

23%-74%, beginners luck?

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
