Lead and monolith bullets

JMM,barell twist in your Todd is? Do you have a good precision?
For white tail 110gr is ok,but do you try with moos?
1/10 twist Pacnor barrel. 0.5 MOA groups. Whitetail is easy. They penetrate/exit 99.5% of the time and the deer never take a step. Elk are a little more tricky. I am pretty careful to place bullet behind the shoulder and let the energy wipe out the heart/lungs. They will exit 90% of the time. I would not try on a North American moose. They are too big, too tough for me to try. There is no moose culling that I know of and don't have an interest in hunting one. We have them on our street and neighborhood in Colorado.

How much is energy-wise minimum (E100) in J?

Elk, that can run 800 to 1000lbs where I live, have a general guideline of 1500 ft lbs at impact. I think thats a bit over 2000J. At 400 yards, the 130gr TTSX still has nearly 1700 ft lbs of energy (2300J).

I would use them on any ungulate approaching 1000 lbs, with the caveat that animals over 600 lbs I’d keep ranges at 300 yards or less. I want that bullet to be going as fast as possible for bigger critters.

For animals under that, I’d be fine out to 400 because of my own shooting skill. With a 250 yard zero, I’m 12” low at 400.
Thanks Gomer

I must try with my .3006 Zastava M70.
Thanks

In Serbia, the law stipulates 2500J for hunting large game. In addition, the smallest caliber is 7mm and the weight of the bullet is 9g. I don't like this and I hope we will change it soon.

Is that from the muzzle, or at impact? The numbers I gave you were at impact. That load is about 4750J at the muzzle.

I just checked and the current standards around here for big game is

Minimum e100 requirements:
Lead core bullets; either 9g and 2700J OR
10g and 2000J
Copper* bullets; 7.7g and 2000J

* I think this means "non-lead" rather than copper specifically.

  • 9g = 140 gn -> in older rifles hard to get to the required velocities without excessive pressures
  • 10g = 155 n -> the 'standard' weight when it comes to to big game bullets for the 6.5x55 - basically safe in "Husqvarna" rifles - but there are some older ex-militiary rifles where this might not be true.
  • 7.7.g = 120gn
I thought there was also a minimum calibre requirement of 6.5 mm but I can't find it right now. Maybe it was just in my head, but still this makes some sense as the twist rates/bullet lengths for for bullets in this weight class does not really come into play in e.g. .243 Win etc. So it might not be a formal requirement, but a de-facto effect of the other requirements.

There should be 2500J at the mouth of the barrel. That is ok,but min cal 7mm is not ok

6.5x55 is one of the my favorit cal

As far as monos go. Barnes type monos, no. Cutting Edge or Hammer type monos, yes.

What is the most frequently used projectile in KMG? I'm thinking of you PH
Apologies for the late reply. I am in a bad signal area at the moment.
In my 300 Win that hunters use, I shoot the 180gr Sierra Game King.

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
