Looking to get my model 70 Rebored to 35 Whelen, it’s a classic sporter and I’d rather keep the factory Winchester nomenclature than rebarrel it.
I’m curious if anyone has pictures of how to go about the caliber designation.
I’ve read elsewhere that guys have sanded off the factory designation, it gets re stamped and then just touched up with cold bluing.
If anyone has pictures of this I’d love to see them.
Thanks

I don't have pictures, but I have seen it done several ways, some not so good..dremel to grind, then electric graver with new one, xxxxx, then stamped new one. On the good side, filed and polished off and new one engraved in, small end mill machined flat and new stamped in. Their are several ways to skin the cat, just depends. I haven't seen one from JES though.

I filed off my factory designation and had a guy laser engrave the new designation in the flat spot prior to shipping it to JES. JES does great work by pretty much all accounts, but his stamping of new caliber is a bit crude.

Here is a pic. I took a file and filed out the previous markings and had the new caliber laser engraved at the same spot. At some point I will reblue entire rifle, for now I just hit it with a bit of cold blue.

The most professional way is to use an end mill and remove the original nomenclature by making a long pill or oval shaped channel. Then mark the new nomenclature there, then use cold blue on the inset nomenclature.

It is not a confidence builder for me to see a custom rifle with the wrong caliber or multiple calibers on the barrel. Remove the original facts, replace them in the same location.

just curious, did you bore scope the barrel after you got it back from Jess? I just got mine back rebored to 9.3x62 and took it to my gunsmith to do all the goodies I want done. Had him bore scope the barrel and he said looks nice BUYT the rifling is very thin, hopefully it will workout. I sure hops so as I am doing a lot to the rifle to get it the way I want

I didn't mine is also a weatherby 9.3x62 it shoots great i am going to send him a remington 722 in 30-06 to chamber to 300 h&h magnum

I know on the forums that everybody that I've talked to or read say he does a fantastic wonderful job except for there was one guy I read from about I think it was in October that just bad-mouthed him like crazy. He did a job and he said the rifling was so thin that it would not even imprint the bullet after being fired and the accuracy was so terrible. He called Jess complaining and you know demanding that he get another barrel redone to replace it because he did such a bad job and just got mad cussed him out and told him I don't do any bad work and I don't do anything wrong and hung up on the guy but he's the only one I've heard of but that's why I had him do mine. But like I say my gunsmith just checked it yesterday and he says man this rifling is very thin. He says it looks good so hopefully it's going to work out me too since I paid 300 bucks to get it done and had to buy a barrel. You know for it, but I did get a nice used barrel but good luck and I'll see what happens on mine when it gets back together. I'm going to definitely take some loads that I've got my other 9.3 that I shoot out of very accurate and we'll see what this one does. If it doesn't work out, I guess I'll be buying a new barrel, just a waste of money

You can slug the bore, measure both the bore and groove diameters of the slug and compare to bullet diameter. That will help predict what kind of results to expect.

I’ve been on the fence about sending him a barrel to rebore. Want to go from 30-06 to either 9.3x62 or 35 whelen. I can’t decide.
My question is how long was the turn around time?

I think it would be neat if someone could recut the edges of the lands to sharpen them up. It would have to follow the exact twist rate. Could clean up a lot of older rifles or drillings?

About 3 1/2 weeks

remington 722 is to short and never made in 3006, even the 721 in 3006 is not long enough for the 300 H&H. the factory 721,s in 300 H&H were true magnum actions.

Here is a picture of my JES rebore in .35 Whelen, three groove. I have not shot it much yet, but the few rounds put through it with open sights were accurate at 50 yards. It is not conventional rifling. I recently shortened and recrowned this barrel. The .35 caliber brass pilot for the crowning tool was a very snug fit in bore.

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!

X5i scope is perfect - thanks for an easy transaction! Buy with confidence.
Made it to Augusta Georgia yesterday for a meeting, hunt bookings are looking good for 2026 and 2027, had a great time on our Alabama safari shot a rutting deer at 200 yards with 7mm PRC near Huntsville and then headed on to Butler Alabama and semi guided my first deer ever shot a very nice broken off 8 point with hunter there and spend a few days on 1100 acres hunting preserve awesome place!

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA

Hello - I was looking at your post from several years ago regarding the Winchester 300 H&H. Any chance you still have the lefty M70 300 H&H for sale?
Thank you, Mike
