A message from my wife as I have not found the words to express what I have felt for the last several years. God has blessed our son with a new chance at life, he used the hands of one of the greatest men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. We did not know him well but you could certainly see and feel God’s light shine through him. We are heartbroken but remain ever so grateful for what this amazing man has done for Seth.
Brandi wrote one of the most beautiful and meaningful tributes to the man we owe so much to, I will let her take over from here,
“In Memory of Jason Stoneback
There are moments in life that change you forever. Sometimes they happen because of something beautiful. Sometimes they happen because of something heartbreaking. And sometimes, somehow, they are both.
Our family has been living through one of the hardest seasons of our lives.
As you well know due to failed surgeries seth left foot was dying. After traveling and seeing several specialist, we were eventually faced with a decision no parent ever imagines having to make.
Seth had to amputate his left leg from below the knee.
On July 13,2026 we entrusted our son to Dr. Jason Stoneback and his team at CU ANSCHUTZ in Denver. Dr. Stoneback performed his below knee amputation and on July 16,2026 Dr. Matt Grayson performed his TMR.
I cannot adequately put into words what those days were like.
For my son it was the beginning of a new chapter, one without pain and one where he could live his life to the fullest. For me, it felt like saying goodbye to a part of my child I had known and fought for his entire life. I mourned the loss of his foot. I mourned everything that had brought us to that moment.
I have been through a lot in my life and I am not someone that considers herself particularly emotional. I tend to face things head on and keep moving forward.
But this broke something open in me that I didn’t know was there.
And through all of this Dr. Jason Stoneback showed us compassion, confidence, kindness and hope.
He did not simply see seth as a patient. He saw him as a person. He treated seth with with dignity and genuine care during one of the most frightening and vulnerable times of his life. He gave us reassurance when we were scared, and he helped us believe that there would be a good life on the other side of this impossible decision.
We left Denver believing we would see Stoneback at the end of August for Seth’s follow-up.
Then, on july 29, 2026 we received the news that Dr. Jason Stoneback had tragically died in a motorcycle accident.
That news deeply affected us all.
It felt unreal.
The man who had just changed my sons life forever was suddenly gone.
There is a photograph we will treasure forever - a picture the day after surgery with Dr. Stoneback and my son. It’s a moment in time that we will forever hold close to our hearts.
We did not know Dr. Stoneback for years, we did not know him outside of the walls of the hospital. But in one of the most difficult moments our family has ever faced . He became part of our story in a way that can never be undone.
We trusted him with our son
And he took care of him
For that, I will be forever grateful.
I am heartbroken for his family, for the people who loved him before we ever knew his name. I am heartbroken for his friends, his colleagues, his team, his patients and their families, and for the entire medical community. I cannot imagine the loss they are experiencing.
And I think about the thousands of lives he touched.
Every person who walked into his care carried their own story. Every family had their own fears, hopes , struggles. Somewhere along the way Dr. Stoneback became part of all their stories.
He certainly became part of ours. I wish I could thank him one more time.
Thank you Dr. Stoneback for taking care of our son. Thank you for your compassion and for your skill. Thank you for seeing my son not for what he lost but for the life he has ahead of him.
And thank you for leaving our family with a sense of hope when we needed it most.
I am so incredibly sorry that my son and our family will never have the opportunity to thank you in person for what you did for us.
But we will carry your kindness with us through moving forward.
My son will walk forward into this next chapter of his life, and your hands will forever be part of the story of how he got there.
I hope your family knows how many lives you touched. I hope they know your work mattered not only in the operating room, but in the lives of the people who walked out of it with a second chance, a new beginning and hope.
