How many people have a 35 whelen?

I have one Uncle, he is the youngest of 5 siblings, who went the way of the 35 Whelen when everyone else was using the 30-06. I like cartridges which are less commonly used and the Whelen is an interesting one for sure!
@Captain Munro
Especially when you stoke it up and get 2,700fps with 250s instead of the factory 2,450fps.

That's one Hell of a barrel vice.

LOL The laundry basket was to prop it up just enough to take the pic.
I used the barrel nut wrench to loosen and tighten, along with a 1/2 inch socket wrench with a 3/4 inch socket, and a rear action wrench to get everything off and on.
Below I have pics of all the tools and kits.

Hawk what weight will it be all up?
The 1 in 14 twist is a good compromise and will handle up to 310 grainers.
All you need is some CFE223 and speer 250s and have a shipload of fun. Just hang onto it when you touch it off as you WILL BE in for a surprise.
Bob

After all said and done, it’s going to be around 9 - 10 lbs, respectively. Plenty good for reducing recoil.
Yeah, I can’t wait to get my hands on some CFE223!
I wouldn’t mind getting 225gr to 250gr Accubond bullets to test her out.

@hawkeyesatx
The 225gn Woodleigh is another good bullet
If you can't get any cfe223 try Varget, that will still get the 225 motoring at 2,800fps
You could get @Shootist43 to chime in with with his load for the Whelen with the 225gn Barnes, that's another good load.
Bob.

Certainly does. Better than a 338 Win mag

Bob isn’t baiting. He’s done his homework. I checked into what he’s been saying, and his findings are legitimate. There’s no bull there.
When loaded with the new powders e.g. CFE223, the .35 Whelen outshines the .300 Win & Weatherby magnums, and tops the .338 Win Mag by several ft-lbs.

Like I said, he’s done his homework up, down, left, and right.
Yes, Bob jokes, but not about the.35 Whelen.

I agree I love my 35 Whelen

How much are we talking here in ft-lbs?
Is this new powder technology being applied equally across the competing calibers? I say technology because different cases optimize off different powders.

I'm seeing published data showing 4000 ft lbs out of a .300 WM. 200 grain Accubond at 3000 fps.
Whelen at 2750 with a 225 AB is 3800 ft lbs. Can it go faster? 2800/3900 fps.
Let's look at the .338 WM...225gr AB @2900 fps is 4200 ft lbs.
Now for .30-06...210gr AB LR @2800 fps 3650ftlbs. IF I can squeeze another 50 fps out for 2850 I get 3775 ft lbs.

So as far as I go is a tip of the cap to the Whelen for approaching being as good as. But to say outshine? Hah! Now we're just tipping the Bundy a bit far. Typical cherry picking data to make one's pet cartridge look good.

You are spot on Forrest. This is a repeated misuse of data on this forum by fans of the 35 Whelen. The .35 Whelen can never equal the velocity or ft lbs of energy of the .338 if you also hand load the 338 to full potential with modern powders.

The 338 has a bigger case and simply holds more powder. Plus the .338 diameter will have superior SD and BC with 225 or 250 grain bullets compared to a 35 caliber and will hold velocity and energy better at all ranges.

But you won’t stop the cherry picking of this data as it’s gets repeated on here frequently.

We all have our favorites i guess.

@Forrest Halley
225gn Woodleigh at 2,950fps equals 4,300fpe
250grainer at 2,700fps to 2750 fps equals 4,000fpe.
No tipping the Bundy to far or cherry picking but actual chronoed loads.
@jwp475 has posted photos of actual chronoed loads using the 250 grainer.

Okay so we'll go ahead and load up those other cartridges 150 fps beyond published data as well and see that there is no magical serum in the .35 Whelen.

Cherry picking refers to the deliberate comparison of a souped up load in one caliber to conventional max loads in others to make it look better than it is. What book does that load appear in?

This is very much akin to the folks that nuclear load a 10mm and want to call it a .41 Magnum.

:P Driver:

Speer has published data doing 2700 FPS with 250 grain bullet.

250 grain Hornady Interlock. 64 grain CFE223
