How many people have a 35 whelen?

Lunatic? Bob, I reckon that you are more of a fanatical .35 Whelen zealot on a sacred quest to convert the heathens :A Banana: :A Stirring:! Have a good Christmas and look after the BOSS.
@ZG47
Thanks mate all the best to you and yours for Christmas mate.
The boss is doing well and looking forward to the break.

I worked with a guy from England for years at Exxon Nuclear. He used that SWMBO expression. Sometimes, the English manage to hit the nail directly on the head! And the Australians as well, I see. Merry Christmas, everyone.

When my wife says she has a good idea my immediate reply is that's nice darling but how much will it cost. Women folk are great ideas people but we have to make the idea work and god help us if we can't.

I have three, a Remington 700 I bought on my 18th birthday in 1992 and have hunted with ever since killing 9 species of North American big game with, a Ruger #1, and a Remington 7600 Carbine.

Favorite load is 250 grain Nosler Partition and 59.5 grains of RL15 for 2550 FPS. Works on everything from the big bears to whitetails.

I have a Remington 78 (matte blue birch stock 700) that was ER Shaw re barreled from 270 to 35 Whelen. I have a semi custom (LH shooter RH action) Richards Microfit stock on order. I mainly shoot the 225 GK and some Nosler AB for whitetail. I've been loading Varget and RL15, but have picked up some CFE223 I'm wanting to try with the 225s. I have shot one string with the Speer 250, but first attempt wasn't accurate.
It is going to Africa with me on my next trip.

With the 225 Sierra gkbthp you can load up to a max of 70gn of CFE223 for 2,900fps and 64.5 gn of CFE223 with the Speer 250s for 2,700 fps.
Both loads are very accurate in my Whelen.
The 250gn Speers will ork well on plains game.
The 225 gn accubond and 61 gn of Varget/ 2208 is another good load.
Bob

That Sierra 225 Gameking is a heck of a deer bullet, almost too good. By that I mean it damages more meat than I prefer. That's what I started loading when I first got my first .35 Whelen 30 some years ago. It will absolutely flatten deer though !! When I started hunting bigger stuff I started using 250 Nosler Partition for pretty much anything. I do want to work up a 225 grain TSX with CFE 223 and see what it will do though.

Thanks Bob!
I’m currently loading the accubonds with 59.5 grains of. Varget and getting better groups than the RL15, not sure of the speed. When I get my new set up ,stock and scope, I’m going to experiment with some more loads.

I’ve been using the 225GKs for a little over 15 years and most deer go straight down. I did tear one up pretty bad with a sharp quartering shot that hit the ham. I’ve shot a few with accubonds with the same results. I used my 308 with 165 GKs this year and the deer ran at the shot, which reminded me why I built the 35 to start with. Bang Flop.

I love mine! Hoping to use it in Africa this year. It shoots 3 ammo combos well but I think the Nosler Accubond in 225 grain is best for all around hunting!

Meat damage is why I went back to the 250 grain roundnose in all my 35 caliber rifles except for the 35 remington.

I just picked up a 400 W built on a 1903. I have basic brass on the way but no idea what chamber it may be? Quick photo but the brake will come off and if it needs a thread cut off and the Griffin and Howe/ Pertov reamer run in I'll get it done. If you have any tips or tricks with this thing I'd appreciate (read love) a PM as not to derail this thread. JohnView attachment 417317
Nice rifle. You can use .30-06 stripper clips loaded with 35 Whelen in it if you need more rounds, given that they didn't grind off the lugs... 8mm Mauser clips work as well, and are much better made.

The 250's at 2700 plus makes the Whelen super impressive in my humble opinion.
I was able to achieve 2745 FPS out of my Highwall
Completely agree, 250 HotCor. But I have a part of a box of Remington 250 CoreLokt at 2400. Very pleasant to shoot and a deadly round. Some might call it pedestrian. Some might call the 35 Whelen pedestrian. I don't mind walking.

For what it is worth I mostly shoot a 7mm mag and a compound bow, so i don’t really have a dog in this fight. I’m not trying to defend the 300 or 338 win mags nor am i trying to downplay the 35 whelen.

My engineering background just has me looking at the cartridge capacities and it is simply impossible for the 35 whelen to outperform either of these when using the same weight bullets and loading to max capacities.

H2O capacity
35 whelen = 72.6 grains
300 win mag = 93.6 grains
338 win Mag = 86 grains

There is no science or handloading fairy dust that can overcome this.

It’s not a knock on any cartridge.
All true. But 2400 to 2700 250 gr bullet is good enough for damn near anything. Unless you shoot at 500 yards. In which case, sneak in a little closer.... a 35 Whelen is a lovely companion, a 375 Weatherby, impressive though it is, never will be... Remember anything that's gonna get you must close through several hundred yards of effective 35 Whelen range!

358 Norma Mag is for all intents and purposes a necked up 338 win and it is about 100 FPS faster than the 338 win
Yes for a given effective pressure, more force is exerted on the larger diameter bullet, giving it greater acceleration in the barrel & therefore more muzzle velocity. All other things being equal...
