Thanks for the welcoming! About to embark on my first Safari in just a few weeks. Spiral horn species plus zebra. I've been working on on sharpening my shooting skills off sticks which is decidedly different. Broke two sets of commercial sticks, then made my own which have held up nicely. Still trying to perfect my skills, although trying to work full time and get shooting time in as well is not easy. Have spent some time perusing the forums for info and really appreciate all the info I've attained which I re-read periodically to make it stick. Again thanks for the welcome!

Welcome to AH!

Interesting comment about breaking shooting sticks. There is an excellent company which sells very nice looking shooting sticks, made in a variety of woods. I have tried a couple of sets, and have found them to look great, but not function very well.

Shooting sticks need to have enough rigidity to them that when you place your rifle - which may weigh up to 10 lbs or more - on them, there is no "bow" or flex in the legs. Some of the plastic ones with extendable legs are OK, but frankly, the very best Ive ever used were made of bamboo lashed together with a length of old inner tube (not so easy to find anymore in NA, but found everywhere in Africa!). These were firm sticks - when you placed them and put your rifle on them, you could stand there for some time with the sticks carrying the weight of your gun, without moving or flexing, waiting for the perfect shot.

That's the kind of sticks you need to practice from. Looks like you made your own - good for you!

Welcome to AH sir!

Have a great time and do share your hunting report when you return.

Nothing like Spiral Horns!

My sons and I are leaving on a PG hunt in early August. My oldest boy purchased a bog pod. I made 2 sets of shooting sticks out of Hardwood Dowels (purchased at Home Depot. I used a round drive belt for a vacuum cleaner to hold the sticks together. I put rubber heater hose on the tops of two of the sticks and rubber feet on all three legs. They are cheap as well as sturdy.

Welcome aboard!

By the way welcome to the site. This is the place to come for answers to all of your safari hunting questions. I forgot to mention that my boys and I have hunted hogs around San Antonio on several occasions. We had a blast.

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?
